Abstract

The invention relates in part to a method of maintaining heavy metal homeostasis in healthy humans, comprising chronically administering to healthy humans a pharmaceutical composition consisting of from about 1 mg to less than about 200 mg of Posiphen or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof together with one or more pharmaceutically acceptable excipients, on a once a day basis. By virtue of this method, prophylactic treatment of a potential disease state such as a neurodegenerative disease, cardiovascular homeostasis, cancer, vital organ homeostasis, and the like. The invention also relates in part to a method of restoring heavy metal homeostasis in sick patients, comprising chronically administering to a sick patient a pharmaceutical composition consisting of from about 1 mg to less than about 200 mg of Posiphen or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof together with one or more pharmaceutically acceptable excipients, on a once a day basis. By virtue of this method, treatment of a potential disease state such as a neurodegenerative disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, vital organ dysfunction and heavy metal dis-homeostasis, and the like.

Claims (15)

1. A method of maintaining heavy metal homeostasis avoiding the effect of toxic levels of a heavy metal in cells in a healthy human or restoring heavy metal homeostasis in a sick human patient, consisting of chronically administering to a human who is at risk of or has abnormally high levels of a heavy metal and who has not been diagnosed with a neurological disease a pharmaceutical composition from 1 to 4 times daily, the pharmaceutical composition consisting of from about 1 mg to less than about 200 mg of Posiphen, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, together with one or morepharmaceutically acceptable excipients in a therapeutically effective amount to thereby maintain heavy metal homeostasis in the human and avoid the effects of toxic levels of the heavy metal in the human, wherein the heavy metal is selected from the group consisting of iron, copper, zinc and a combination of any of the foregoing.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the heavy metal is iron.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the active agent is Posiphen and the pharmaceutical composition is administered orally on a once a day basis.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the active agent is Posiphen administered in an amount from about 1 mg to about 30 mg, per day.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein Posiphen is administered orally.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administration of a therapeutically effective amount of Posiphen, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof stops, slows or delays the onset of cancer in the human.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administration of a therapeutically effective amount of Posiphen, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof maintains homeostasis in vital organs in the human.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein a therapeutically effective amount of Posiphen, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof maintains homeostasis in a vital organ selected from brain, heart, lung, liver, and kidney.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the Posiphen is chronically administered via a route selected from the group consisting of orally, parenterally, sublingually, suppository, nasally, topically, transdermally, and implant under the skin.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administration of a therapeutically effective amount of Posiphen, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof stops, slows or delays the course of cancer in the human.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administration of a therapeutically effective amount of Posiphen, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof stops, slows or delays the onset of cardiovascular disease or the course of a neurodegenerative disease or condition in the human.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein Posiphen is administered orally.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein Posiphen is administered parenterally.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the toxic effects caused by the production of high levels of the heavy metal in the human are the production of high levels of a protein selected from the group consisting of APP, Aβ, SOD proteins, SNCA, NAC, TSE amyloid plaque, HTT, Tau, alpha-synuclein, TDP43 and C9orf72.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the neurodegenerative disease is selected from the group consisting of Down Syndrome, alpha-synucleopathies, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Prion's disease, Amyloid Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis, and Tauopathies, Vascular dementia, Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), Mixed dementia, Frontotemporal dementia, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Normal pressure hydrocephalus, and Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CPE), vascular dementia, and posterior cortical atrophy (PCA).
