Abstract

The present disclosure relates to gastrointestinal (GI) tract detection methods, devices and systems.

Claims (28)

1. A gastrointestinal tract ingestible device, comprising:

a gastrointestinal tract ingestible housing comprising a chamber;

a composition in the chamber, the composition comprising:

a dye capable of binding to or reacting with a target component of a viable prokaryotic cell from a sample collected from the gastrointestinal tract from an exterior of the housing, wherein the dye exhibits fluorescence that is measurably altered when the dye is bound to or reacted with the target component of the viable prokaryotic cell; and

a reagent capable of selectively lysing eukaryotic cells; and

a system including a light source and a light detector in the housing,

wherein:

the system is configured to detect fluorescence from the reaction of the dye from the chamber and the target component of the viable prokaryotic cell from the sample collected from the gastrointestinal tract from the exterior of the housing.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the system further comprises a plurality of lenses disposed along a path of the light from the light source to the light detector.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the system further comprises a mirror disposed along the path of the light from the light source to the light detector.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein:

the light detector is a first light detector, and the system further comprises a second light detector;

the light source is configured to emit light that interacts with the product so that the product fluoresces;

the first light detector is configured to detect fluorescence from the product; and

the second light detector is configured to detect fluorescence from the product.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the dye exhibits fluorescence when bound to a nucleic acid.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the dye is a lipophilic dye that exhibits fluorescence when metabolized by the prokaryotic cell.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the dye exhibits fluorescence when reduced by the prokaryotic cell or a cell component of the prokaryotic cell.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the dye comprises a member selected from the group consisting of resazurin, C 12 -resazurin, 7-hydroxy-9H-(1,3 dichloro-9,9-dimethylacridin-2-ol) N-oxide, 6-chloro-9-nitro-5-oxo-5H-benzo[a]phenoxazine, and a tetrazolium salt.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the dye exhibits fluorescence when oxidized by the prokaryotic cell or a cell component of the prokaryotic cell.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the dye exhibits fluorescence when de-acetylated and/or oxidized by the prokaryotic cell or a cell component of the prokaryotic cell.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the dye exhibits fluorescence when reacted with a peptidase.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the dye comprises luminol.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein the reagent comprises a detergent.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the reagent comprises a non-ionic detergent.

15. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a second reagent capable of selectively lysing eukaryotic cells.

16. The device of claim 15 , further comprising an electrolyte.

17. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an electrolyte.
