Abstract

Apparatus, systems, and methods for a network initiated packet data network connection in communication systems are described.

Claims (36)

1. One or more non-transitory, computer-readable media having instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause a control-plane cloud in a network to:

determine to switch a user equipment (UE) from a first connection with a data network to a second connection with the data network, wherein: the first connection is managed by a first Internet Protocol (IP) anchor user-plane function (UPF) node and is associated with a first IP address or prefix and the second connection is associated with a second IP address or prefix;

select a second IP anchor UPF node to manage the second connection;

transmit, to the UE, an instruction to use the second connection with the second IP address or prefix by moving one or more existing traffic flows from the first connection to the second connection, wherein the first connection at least partially overlaps, in time, with the second connection.

2. The one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the control-plane cloud to: transmit the instruction in a non-access stratum (NAS) message.

3. The one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the control-plane cloud to: transmit at least a portion of the second IP address or prefix to the UE.

4. The one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 3 , wherein to transmit at least the portion of the second IP address or prefix, the control-plane cloud is to transmit a router advertisement message that includes an IPv6 prefix.

5. The one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 1 , wherein the control-plane cloud includes a control-plane node or a radio access network node to determine to switch the UE from the first connection to the second connection.

6. The one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the control-plane cloud to: instruct one or more user-plane nodes to establish the second connection.

7. The one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the control-plane cloud to: determine to switch the UE from the first connection to the second connection based on a geographical proximity of the UE to the second IP anchor node.

8. One or more non-transitory, computer-readable media having instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause a user equipment (UE) to:

communicate with a data network via a first connection managed by a first Internet Protocol (IP) anchor user plane function (UPF) node, the first connection associated with a first Internet Protocol (IP) address or prefix;

receive, from a control-plane network node, an instruction to communicate with the data network via a second connection, wherein the second connection is managed by a second IP anchor UPF node and is associated with a second IP address or prefix;

communicate with the data network via the second connection based on the instruction; and

move one or more existing traffic flows from the first connection to the second connection, wherein the first connection at least partially overlaps, in time, with the second connection.

9. The one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the UE to: process a non-access stratum (NAS) message to receive the instruction.

10. The one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the UE to: receive at least a portion of the second IP address or prefix from the control-plane network node.

11. The one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 10 , wherein to receive at least the portion of the second IP address or prefix, the UE is to process a router advertisement message.

12. The one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 11 , wherein the second IP address or prefix includes an IPv6 prefix.

13. The one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the UE to:

receive routing rules; and

transmit, based on the routing rules, data from an application via the second connection.

14. A method comprising:

transmitting or receiving messages to or from a data network via a first connection managed by a first Internet Protocol (IP) anchor user plane function (UPF) node, the first connection associated with a first Internet Protocol (IP) address or prefix;

receiving, from a control-plane network node, an instruction to transmit or receive messages to or from the data network via a second connection, wherein the second connection is managed by a second IP anchor UPF node and is associated with a second IP address or prefix;

transmitting or receiving messages to or from the data network via the second connection based on the instruction; and

moving one or more existing traffic flows from the first connection to the second connection, wherein the first connection at least partially overlaps, in time, with the second connection.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising: processing a non-access stratum (NAS) message to receive the instruction.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising: receiving at least a portion of the second IP address or prefix from the control-plane network node.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising: processing a router advertisement message to receive at least the portion of the second IP address or prefix.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the second IP address or prefix includes an IPv6 prefix.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

determining the first connection does not support any active flows; and

releasing the first connection based on said determining that the first connection does not support any active flows.

20. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

routing traffic flows created after the second connection is established to the second connection.
