Abstract

A surgical system includes at least two laparoscopic instruments having distal portions positionable in a body cavity. An endoscopic camera is carried by a robotic automated assistant and is positionable in the body cavity to capture images of a surgical site and the distal portions of the laparoscopic instruments. At least one computerized platform is configured for receiving input from a user input device indicating a user selection of a selected one of the laparoscopic instruments, visually identifying the selected one of said laparoscopic instruments using a graphic designator on said displayed images of the surgical site, tracking the selected laparoscopic instrument using image information received from said endoscopic camera, and causing the automated assistant to maneuver the endoscopic camera so as to focus said endoscope on s the selected laparoscopic instrument.

Claims (31)

1. A surgical system comprising:

at least two laparoscopic instruments having distal portions positionable in a body cavity, the distal portions maneuverable within a body cavity during a surgical procedure;

an endoscopic camera carried by an automated arm, the camera positionable in the body cavity to capture images of a surgical site and the distal portions of the laparoscopic instruments;

a display configured to display images captured by the endoscopic camera; and

at least one computerized platform configured for

receiving first input from a user indicating a user selection of a first selected one of the laparoscopic instruments to be tracked by automatic movement of the endoscopic camera;

in response to said first input,

displaying a graphic designator as an overlay on said displayed images of the surgical site in a position overlaying an image of the first selected one of said laparoscopic instruments, and

tracking movement of said first selected laparoscopic instrument using image information received from said endoscopic camera and, in response to movement of said first selected laparoscopic instrument, maneuvering said endoscopic camera using the automated arm so as to maintain focus of said endoscopic camera on said first selected laparoscopic instrument during movement of said at least two laparoscopic instruments in the body cavity;

receiving second input from a user indicating a user selection of a second selected one of the laparoscopic instruments to be tracked by automatic movement of the endoscopic camera;

in response to said second input,

displaying a graphic designator as an overlay on said displayed images of the surgical site in a position overlaying an image of the second selected one of said laparoscopic instruments; and

tracking movement of said second selected laparoscopic instrument using image information received from said endoscopic camera and, in response to movement of said second selected laparoscopic instrument, maneuvering said endoscopic camera using the automated arm so as to maintain focus of said endoscopic camera on said second selected laparoscopic instrument during movement of said at least two laparoscopic instruments in the body cavity.

2. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein said at least one computerized platform is configured for receiving the user input from a user input device.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein the user input device is a wearable user input device.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein the user input device is mountable to a surgical instrument.

5. A surgical method, comprising:

positioning distal portions of at least two laparoscopic instruments at a surgical site;

capturing images of the surgical site using an endoscopic camera;

displaying the images of the surgical site on a display;

receiving first input indicating a user selection of a first selected one of the laparoscopic instruments;

in response to said first input,

displaying a graphic designator as an overlay on said displayed images of the surgical site in a position overlaying an image of the first selected one of said laparoscopic instruments; and

tracking movement of said first selected laparoscopic instrument using image information received from said endoscopic camera and, in response to movement of said first selected laparoscopic instrument, automatically maneuvering said endoscopic camera using an automated arm so as to maintain focus of said endoscopic camera on said first selected laparoscopic instrument;

receiving second input indicating a user selection of a second selected one of the laparoscopic instruments;

in response to said second input,

displaying a graphic designator as an overlay on said displayed images of the surgical site in a position overlaying an image of the second selected one of said laparoscopic instruments; and

tracking movement of said second selected laparoscopic instrument using image information received from said endoscopic camera and, in response to movement of said first selected laparoscopic instrument, automatically maneuvering said endoscopic camera using an automated arm so as to maintain focus of said endoscopic camera on said second selected laparoscopic instrument.

6. The surgical method of claim 5 , wherein receiving input indicating a user selection comprises receiving the input from a user input device.

7. The surgical method of claim 6 , wherein the user input device is a wearable user input device.

8. The surgical method of claim 6 , wherein the user input device is mountable to a surgical instrument.
