Abstract

An apparatus and a method are provided for a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) home air filter to remove airborne molecular contaminants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from air within residential spaces. The HVAC home air filter comprises a supportive frame having a shape and size suitable to orient the HVAC home air filter within a residential HVAC system. A filter medium is retained within the supportive frame to remove the airborne molecular contaminants and VOCs from air flowing through the residential HVAC system. The filter medium comprises a combination of media layers configured to exhibit a relatively high filtration efficiency and a low air pressure drop across the filter medium. The supportive frame comprises a plurality of elongate sections and corner sections disposed along perimeter edges of the filter medium to support the filter medium within the residential HVAC system so as direct air through the filter medium.

Claims (22)

1. An air filter for a residential HVAC system, comprising:

a filter medium comprising one or more media layers for removing contaminants from an airstream; and

a frame for supporting the filter medium within the HVAC system, the frame including a plurality of elongate sections and a plurality of corner sections, wherein each of the plurality of elongate sections and the plurality of corner sections comprise a U-shaped cross-sectional shape configured to slidably receive an outer edge of the filter medium, wherein each end of each of the plurality of corner sections is configured to receive an end of an elongate section.

2. The air filter of claim 1 , wherein at least one screen is coupled with the filter medium.

3. The air filter of claim 2 , wherein the at least one screen comprises a rigid material for supporting the filter medium within the airstream.

4. The air filter of claim 2 , wherein the at least one screen comprises a first screen and a second screen disposed on opposite sides of the filter medium.

5. The air filter of claim 4 , wherein the frame is configured to couple the first screen and the second screen with the filter medium.

6. The air filter of claim 5 , wherein the frame is molded onto perimeter edges of the first screen and the second screen and filter medium.

7. The air filter of claim 1 , wherein the one or more media layers include a fiber density that increases in the direction of the airstream.

8. The air filter of claim 1 , wherein the one or more media layers includes a first media layer and a second media layer.

9. The air filter of claim 8 , wherein the second media layer comprises a fiber density that is greater than a fiber density comprising the first media layer.

10. The air filter of claim 8 , wherein the first media layer includes a color that is different than a color of the second media layer to indicate a desired direction of the airstream.

11. The air filter of claim 8 , wherein the first media layer and the second media layer are arranged within the filter medium to optimize a difference in air pressure across the filter medium.

12. The air filter of claim 8 , wherein the first media layer and the second media layers are arranged within the filter medium to optimize a filtration efficiency of the filter medium.

13. The air filter of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises multiple elongate sections and corner sections that are configured to support perimeter edges of the filter medium.

14. The air filter of claim 13 , wherein the elongate sections and the corner sections are configured to be molded onto the perimeter edges.

15. The air filter of claim 13 , wherein the elongate sections and the corner sections are configured to support the filter medium within an interior of the HVAC system.

16. The air filter of claim 13 , wherein the corner sections are configured to slidably retain the ends of the elongate sections.

17. The air filter of claim 13 , wherein the elongate sections include an open side that is configured to receive a perimeter edge of the filter medium.

18. The air filter of claim 1 , wherein the frame includes at least one grate configured to enclose the filter medium within the frame without restricting the airstream through the filter medium.

19. The air filter of claim 1 , wherein the frame is coupled with at least one wire support configured to resist bowing of the filter medium due to the airstream.

20. The air filter of claim 19 , wherein the frame is molded onto the at least one wire support and the filter medium.
