Abstract

A factory processed and assembled optical fiber arrangement is configured to pass through tight, tortuous spaces when routed to a demarcation point. A connector housing attaches to the optical fiber arrangement at the demarcation point (or after leaving the tight, tortuous spaces) to form a connectorized end of the optical fiber. A fiber tip is protected before leaving the factory until connection is desired.

Claims (31)

1. A connector arrangement comprising:

a ferrule assembly terminating an optical fiber of an optical cable, the ferrule assembly including an optical ferrule and a hub supporting the ferrule, the optical ferrule receiving the optical fiber so that an end of the optical fiber is accessible at an end face of the optical ferrule;

a front connector housing arrangement, the front connector housing arrangement including a first body defining an interior in which the ferrule assembly is disposed so that the end face of the optical ferrule is accessible through an open front of the first body, the first body including a first portion of a keying arrangement at the interior, the first body also including a first portion of a latching arrangement; and

a rear connector housing arrangement that couples to the front connector housing arrangement, the rear connector housing arrangement including:

a keying member coupled to the hub of the ferrule assembly in a rotationally fixed position, the keying member having an exterior that includes a second portion of the keying arrangement, the second portion of the keying arrangement being configured to engage the first portion of the keying arrangement in only one rotational orientation to rotationally key the ferrule assembly to the first body;

an anchor member disposed about the optical fiber, the anchor member being attached to a jacket or strength layer of the optical cable; and

a second body coupling together the keying member and the anchor member, the second body including a second portion of the latching arrangement that is configured to engage the first portion of the latching arrangement of the first body to secure the keying member and the anchor member to the first body.

2. The connector arrangement of claim 1 , further comprising a coil spring disposed within the rear connector housing arrangement, the coil spring being configured to bias the ferrule assembly towards the open front of the first body.

3. The connector arrangement of claim 2 , wherein the coil spring extends from a spring stop defined within an interior of the rear connector housing arrangement towards the hub of the ferrule assembly.

4. The connector arrangement of claim 3 , wherein the spring stop is defined by the second body.

5. The connector arrangement of claim 3 , wherein the coil spring has a first end abutting the spring stop and an opposite second end abutting the keying member.

6. The connector arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the front connector housing arrangement also includes a grip housing that mounts about the first body.

7. The connector arrangement of claim 1 , further comprising a dust cap mounted over the end face of the optical ferrule, the dust cap being sized to fit through the first body so that the dust cap remains on the optical ferrule during and after assembly of the connector arrangement.

8. The connector arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the latching arrangement defines a catch surface and the second portion of the latching arrangement includes a protrusion extending outwardly from an exterior of the second body.

9. The connector arrangement of claim 8 , wherein the first portion of the latching arrangement is deflectable.

10. The connector arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the hub defines a plurality of externally facing flat surfaces; and wherein the keying member defines a plurality of inwardly facing flat surfaces that align with and engage the externally facing flat surfaces of the hub to rotationally align and secure the keying member with the hub.

11. The connector arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the second body defines a slot and wherein the anchor member defines a protrusion that fits within the slot to retain the anchor member at the second body.

12. The connector arrangement of claim 1 , further comprising a strain relief boot that is axially fixed relative to the second body.

13. The connector arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the rear connector housing arrangement extends between opposite first and second ends, the first end of the rear connector housing arrangement having a different cross-dimension than the second end of the rear connector housing arrangement.

14. The connector arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the keying member defines a protrusion that fits within a keyway defined within the first body.

The connector arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the second body extends between opposite first and second axial ends, wherein the second body couples to the keying member towards the first axial end of the second body, and wherein the second body couples to the anchor member towards the second axial end of the second body.

16. The connector arrangement of claim 15 , wherein the second portion of the latching arrangement is disposed closer to the first axial end than to the second axial end.

17. The connector arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the rear connector housing arrangement is assembled prior to being coupled to the front connector housing arrangement.

18. The connector arrangement of claim 17 , wherein the rear connector housing arrangement is configured to be inserted into the front connector housing arrangement from a rear of the front connector housing arrangement.

19. The connector arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the keying member snap-fits to the second body.

20. A connector sub-assembly configured to be moved through a duct, the connector sub-assembly comprising:

a ferrule assembly terminating an optical fiber of an optical cable, the ferrule assembly including an optical ferrule, a hub supporting the ferrule, and a dust cap mounted about the ferrule, the optical ferrule receiving the optical fiber so that an end of the optical fiber is accessible at an end face of the optical ferrule, the dust cap covering the end face of the optical ferrule;

a keying member disposed about the optical fiber, the keying member being coupled to the hub of the ferrule assembly in a rotationally fixed position, the keying member including a portion of a keying arrangement at an exterior surface of the keying member;

an anchor member disposed about the optical fiber, the anchor member being attached to a jacket or strength layer of the optical cable;

a body coupling to the keying member to hold the keying member at a rotationally fixed location relative to the body, the body also coupling to the anchor member to hold the anchor member at a rotationally fixed location relative to the body, the keying member and the anchor member being carried with the body so that the keying member and the anchor member move axially in unison with the body when the body is moved axially; and

a coil spring disposed about the optical fiber between the hub of the ferrule assembly and the anchor member, the coil spring being disposed within the body to be carried with the body.
