Abstract

Disclosed is a server rack system that is composed of and/or constructed from cartridges adapted to retain computing equipment. The cartridge dimensions can very to retention-oriented embodiments that hold and allow air passage, to smart cartridges that have logic capabilities and internal components that control airflow passing therein.

Claims (22)

1 . A server rack comprising:

a building defining an enclosed building interior and having building inlet conduit for sealed movement of gas within said building and outlet conduit for exhausting gas to a heat reservoir; and

a server rack stand comprising lateral support members defining an interior void and an airflow inlet passage in communication with said interior void and in fluid communication with said building inlet conduit, and an airflow outlet passage, in communication with said interior void and in fluid communication with said building outlet conduit; and

a cartridge, affixable upon said lateral support members, adapted to retain a computer and having an airflow passage channel.

2 . The server rack of claim 1 comprising a cartridge adapted to form at least a portion of an interior sidewall of said rack stand and forming a boundary of said interior void, wherein said airflow passage channel is in direct fluid contact with said interior void.

3 . The server rack of claim 2 wherein said server rack stand interior sidewall is composed of multiple cartridges totaling at least 50% by surface area.

4 . The server rack of claim 2 wherein said cartridge includes an interior cavity and wherein said airflow passage is bounded by a first opening and second opening.

5 . The server rack of claim 4 wherein said server rack stand interior sidewall is composed of multiple cartridges totaling at least 50% by surface area.

6 . The server rack of claim 5 wherein said server rack stand includes a first lateral support member having a first lateral support member sidewall composed of multiple cartridges totaling at least 50% by surface area, and a second lateral support member having a second lateral support member inner sidewall composed of multiple cartridges totaling at least 50% by surface area.

7 . The server rack of claim 6 wherein said first lateral support member is positioned opposite of said second lateral support member.

8 . A method of directing air through a server facility, said method comprising:

channeling cooled air through building inlet conduit within an enclosed building through an air inlet passage of a server rack stand into a first discrete partition of an interior void thereof, said rack stand comprising lateral support members defining said interior void;

directing cooled air from said interior void external to said server rack stand in a closed air circuit that returns to a second discrete interior void partition as exhaust air; and

affixing a primary cartridge to said server rack and positioning said cartridge to permit said closed air circuit to pass through an airflow channel thereof; and

channeling said exhausted air through an air outlet passage of said server rack stand into building outlet conduit within said enclosed building to an exhaust source.

9 . The method of claim 8 wherein said affixing step includes affixing said primary cartridge to said server rack and positioning said primary cartridge to permit said closed air circuit, in a pathway from said server rack, to pass through said primary airflow channel thereof.

10 . The method of claim 9 wherein said affixing step includes affixing a complementary cartridge with a secondary airflow channel to a second lateral support member, positioned opposite said primary cartridge on a primary lateral support member.

11 . The method of claim 10 wherein said affixing step includes affixing said complementary cartridge to permit said closed air circuit, in pathway to said server rack, to pass through said complementary airflow channel thereof.

12 . The method of claim 10 wherein said affixing step includes affixing said primary cartridge to said server rack and positioning said primary cartridge to permit said closed air circuit, in a pathway both (i) from said server rack and (ii) to said server rack, to pass through said airflow channel thereof.

13 . The method of claim 9 wherein said affixing step includes affixing a complementary cartridge with a secondary airflow channel to a second lateral support member, positioned linearly with said primary cartridge on a primary lateral support member.

14 . The method of claim 13 wherein said affixing step includes affixing said complementary cartridge to permit said closed air circuit, in pathway to said server rack, to pass through said complementary airflow channel thereof.

15 . The method of claim 13 wherein said affixing step includes affixing said primary cartridge to said server rack and positioning said primary cartridge to permit said closed air circuit, in a pathway both (i) from said server rack and (ii) to said server rack, to pass through said airflow channel thereof.
