Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to medical devices and methods of manufacturing medical devices, such as an ophthalmologic medical device.

Claims (23)

1. A medical device comprising:

a device head comprising:

a first arm comprising a first end and an opposing second end; and

a second arm comprising a third end and a fourth end, wherein said first end is coupled to said third end, and wherein said second end is spaced from said fourth end to define a gap therebetween;

wherein each arm comprises a pair of side surfaces and a pair of end surfaces, wherein said side surfaces are defined by forming a first profile in a first surface of at least one sheet of material in a first orientation plane, wherein said end surfaces are defined by forming a second profile in a second surface of the at least one sheet of material in a second orientation plane such that each arm is entirely defined by the first profile and the second profile, wherein each arm comprises a proximal portion and a distal portion oriented obliquely to the proximal portion, and wherein the proximal portion comprises a constant thickness.

2. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising a rod coupled to said device head.

3. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , wherein said side surfaces are oriented perpendicular to said end surfaces.

4. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , wherein forming the at least one sheet of material comprises forming a plurality of sheets of material, and wherein forming the first profile in the first surface comprises forming the first profile in the first surface of each of the plurality of sheets of material.

5. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising forming a block of material, wherein forming the at least one sheet of material comprises forming a plurality of sheets of material from the block of material, wherein the plurality of sheets are integrally coupled together.

6. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , wherein forming the first profile in the first surface includes forming a side profile of the device head in the first surface.

7. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , wherein forming the second profile in the second surface includes forming a rod portion, a pair f the first and second arms, and a gripping surface on each arm in the second surface.

8. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising:

a first gripping surface formed at said second end of said first arm; and

a second gripping surface formed at said fourth end of said second arm.

9. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , wherein said first profile is formed by at least one of roll forming, stamping, electric discharge machining (EDM), extruding, and laser cutting.

10. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , wherein said second profile is formed by at least one of stamping, electric discharge machining, and laser cutting.

11. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , wherein said first arm and said second arm are formed from one of stainless steel, titanium, a nickel-titanium alloy, and thermoplastic materials.

12. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , selected from the group consisting of an ophthalmologic device, an optometric device, a microsurgical device, an endoscopic surgical device, a neurosurgical device, or a plastic surgical device.

13. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the second profile is different from the first profile.

14. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the distal portion comprises a tapered thickness.

15. The medical device in accordance with claim 14 , wherein the proximal portion comprises a constant height.

16. The medical device in accordance with claim 15 , wherein the distal portion comprises a tapered height.

17. The medical device in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the distal portion extends from the proximal portion, wherein the proximal portion comprises a constant height, and wherein the distal portion comprises a tapered thickness and a tapered height.
