Supporting a large number of devices in wireless communications
A method for receiving a backoff value at a wireless station is presented. A traffic indication map is received at the station, wherein a backoff number is implicitly assigned to the station based on a position of the station within the traffic indication map. The backoff value is determined by multiplying the backoff number by a predetermined time value.
1. A method for use in a station (STA), the method comprising:
sending registration information to an access point (AP);
receiving a registration identifier (RID) assignment from the AP;
receiving a traffic indication corresponding to the RID, wherein the traffic indication indicates that there is data for the STA; and
receiving the data from the AP based on the received traffic indication.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein the registration information includes at least one registered state based operation parameter.
3. The method of claim 2 wherein the parameter include the sleep cycle.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein the receiving uses medium access control (MAC) management frames.
5. The method of claim 1 wherein the RID is assigned by the AP.
6. The method of claim 1 wherein the RID is unique.
7. The method of claim 1 wherein the RID is within the basic service set (BSS) domain.
8. The method of claim 1 wherein the RID is used by the STA to decode traffic indications from the AP.
9. The method of claim 1 wherein the traffic indications are indicative of buffered bufferable units (BUs).
10. The method of claim 9 wherein the BUs are delivered on a traffic indication group (TIG) basis during a STA listening window.
11. The method of claim 1 wherein exchanging registration information and receiving a RID allows entry into a registered state based power savings mode.
12. The method of claim 11 wherein entry is based on explicit handshaking procedures using new MAC management frames to request, respond and acknowledge entry into the registered state based power savings mode.
13. The method of claim 11 wherein exit from the registered state based power savings mode uses a terminating power savings operation procedure.
14. The method of claim 13 wherein exit is based on explicit handshaking procedures using new MAC management frames to request, respond and acknowledge exit from the registered state based power savings mode.
15. The method of claim 1 wherein the STA alternates between available state and not-available state.
16. A station (STA) comprising:
a processor and a transceiver communicatively coupled to:
send registration information to an access point (AP);
receive a registration identifier (RID) assignment from the AP;
receive a traffic indication corresponding to the RID, wherein the traffic indication indicates that there is data for the STA; and
receive the data from the AP based on the received traffic indication.
17. The STA of claim 16 wherein the registration information includes at least one registered state based operation parameter.
18. The STA of claim 16 wherein the RID is within the basic service set (BSS) domain.
19. The STA of claim 16 wherein the traffic indications are indicative of buffered bufferable units (BUs) and the BUs are delivered on a traffic indication group (TIG) basis during a STA listening window.
20. The STA of claim 16 wherein exchanging registration information and receiving a RID allows entry into a registered state based power savings mode.
