Abstract

An apparatus and a method use permeate to flush a reverse osmosis filter membrane in the same flow direction as when fluid is being filtered through the membrane. The apparatus includes a housing having a membrane positioned therein. The membrane has an interior surface and an exterior surface. The housing has an inlet port located outward of the exterior surface of the membrane and first and second outlet ports. The first outlet port is located outward of the exterior surface of the membrane and the second outlet port is located inward of the interior surface of the membrane. A first pump is used to route pressurized, untreated fluid from a fluid source through the membrane to produce permeate. A second pump is used to route permeate to a desired function while also routing some permeate at low pressure to the housing to flush the membrane.

Claims (11)

1. An apparatus for using permeate, derived from fresh water, to flush a reverse osmosis filter membrane in the same direction of flow as when fluid is being filtered through said membrane, comprising:

a) a housing having a reverse osmosis filter membrane positioned therein and having an inlet side and an outlet side, said membrane having an interior surface and an exterior surface, said housing having an inlet port located outward of said exterior surface of said membrane at said inlet side of said housing, and a first outlet port and a second outlet port both located at said outlet side of said housing, said first outlet port located outward of said exterior surface of said membrane and said second outlet port located inward of said interior surface of said membrane;

b) a first pump for pressurizing untreated fluid from a fresh water fluid source and routing said untreated fluid to said inlet side of said housing and through said reverse osmosis filter membrane to produce permeate;

c) a storage tank for holding the permeate routed through said second outlet port of said housing; and

d) a second pump for routing the permeate from said storage tank to a desired function, said second pump also routing said permeate to said inlet side of said housing when said reverse osmosis filter membrane is to be flushed and said first pump is turned off, a portion of said permeate passing adjacent to said exterior surface of said membrane to flush solids from said membrane through said first outlet port to a drain, and the remaining portion of said permeate passing through said membrane to flush solids accumulated within said membrane through said first outlet port to said drain, said first pump and said second pump connected fluidically in parallel to said inlet port of said housing.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said second pump can route the permeate simultaneously to both said desired function and to said housing with said first pump turned off.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said storage tank can hold at least 100 gallons of permeate.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein at least two housings are present and said two housings are arranged in either series or in parallel.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said second pump is turned off after flushing said membrane for at least about 5 minutes to allow said membrane to be immersed in the permeate and pull additional solids from said membrane into said permeate to form a flush fluid.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein more than one reverse osmosis filter membrane is utilized.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein said first pump is a high pressure pump of at least 100 psi, and said second pump is a low pressure pump having a range of from between about 1 psi to about 15 psi.
