Abstract

A system and method for surface inspection of an object using optical coherence tomography (OCT) is provided. The method includes determining a first working distance; determining a first depth of field, based on the first working distance; changing the depth of field to the first depth of field; performing an A-scan of the object; moving the object; determining a subsequent working distance; determining whether the object is in focus at the subsequent working distance, if the object is not in focus: determining a subsequent depth of field based on the subsequent working distance; changing the depth of field to the first depth of field; and performing an A-scan of the object; and otherwise, performing an A-scan of the object.

Claims (27)

1. A system for surface inspection of an object using an optical coherence tomography (OCT) system, the OCT system comprising an optical source to produce an optical beam, a beam splitter to direct a derivative of the optical beam to a reflective element and another derivative of the optical beam to the object via a scanner head and direct optical beams returned from the reflective element and the object to a detector for detection of an interference effect, the system for surface inspection comprising:

one or more processors in communication with a data storage to facilitate execution of a distance determination module and a depth of field module on the one or more processors, wherein the distance determination module determines a first working distance between the scanner head of the OCT system and a first surface location on the object, and wherein the depth-of-field module determines, based on the first working distance, whether the surface of the object at the first surface location is in focus by being within a first depth of field;

a depth-of-field adjusting mechanism to change a current depth of field to the first depth of field, the OCT system performing and outputting an A-scan of the object; and

an object translator to move the object relative to the scanner head,

the distance determination module determining a subsequent working distance being a distance between the scanner head and a subsequent surface location of the moved object,

the depth-of-field module determining, based on the subsequent working distance, whether the surface of the object at the subsequent surface location is in focus by being within a subsequent depth of field, if the object is not in focus:

the depth-of-field module determines a subsequent depth of field, based on the subsequent working distance, in which the surface of the object at the subsequent surface location is in focus by being within the subsequent depth of field;

the depth-of-field adjusting mechanism changes the current depth of field to the subsequent depth of field, the OCT system performing and outputting an A-scan of the object, and

otherwise, the OCT system performing and outputting an A-scan of the object.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the object has a curved surface profile.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the distance determination module determines each of the first working distance and the subsequent working distance by measuring a distance between the scanner head and the surface of the object.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the distance determination module retrieves a surface geometry of the object from a database, and wherein the distance determination module determines each of the first working distance and the subsequent working distance by determining a distance between the scanner head and the surface of the object from the surface geometry of the object.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the object translator continuously moves the object relative to the scanner head.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the depth-of-field module determines whether the surface of the object at the first surface location is within the first depth of field by:

setting a first centric working distance as the first working distance;

setting a first upper boundary of the first depth of field as equivalent to subtracting half of the value of an A-scan depth of field from the centric working distance;

setting a first lower boundary of the first depth of field as equivalent to adding the A-scan depth of field to the first upper boundary; and

determining whether the first surface location is within the first upper boundary and the first lower boundary; and

wherein the depth-of-field module determines whether the surface of the object at the subsequent surface location is within the subsequent depth of field by:

setting a subsequent centric working distance as the subsequent working distance;

setting a subsequent upper boundary of the subsequent depth of field as equivalent to subtracting half of the value of an A-scan depth of field from the centric working distance;

setting a subsequent lower boundary of the subsequent depth of field as equivalent to adding the A-scan depth of field to the subsequent upper boundary; and

determining whether the subsequent surface location is within the subsequent upper boundary and the subsequent lower boundary.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the object translator moves the object in the range of approximately 100 to 1000 microns.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the object translator moves the object approximately 200 microns.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the depth-of-field adjusting mechanism comprises a focus-tuneable lens.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the focus-tuneable lens comprises a liquid lens.
