Abstract

A novel hybrid lithium-ion anode material based on coaxially coated Si shells on vertically aligned carbon nanofiber (CNF) arrays. The unique cup-stacking graphitic microstructure makes the bare vertically aligned CNF array an effective Li + intercalation medium. Highly reversible Li + intercalation and extraction were observed at high power rates. More importantly, the highly conductive and mechanically stable CNF core optionally supports a coaxially coated amorphous Si shell which has much higher theoretical specific capacity by forming fully lithiated alloy. Addition of surface effect dominant sites in close proximity to the intercalation medium results in a hybrid device that includes advantages of both batteries and capacitors.

Claims (23)

1. An anode comprising:

a conductive substrate; and

a material comprising:

a plurality of carbon support filaments;

an intercalation material that reversibly adsorbs charge carriers into a bulk of the intercalation material with the intercalation material changing volume in response to adsorbing the charge carriers into the bulk of the intercalation material; and

a coating material disposed on at least a portion of the intercalation material with the coating material comprising surface effect dominant sites that adsorb charge carriers in a faradaic interaction.

2. The anode of claim 1 , wherein the intercalation material comprises silicon.

3. The anode of claim 1 , wherein the faradaic interaction is a redox reaction.

4. The anode of claim 1 , wherein the intercalation material comprises SiO 2 .

5. The anode of claim 1 , wherein the coating material comprises TiO 2 .

6. The anode of claim 1 , wherein the coating material disposed on at least a portion of the intercalation material has a thickness in the range between 1 and 500 nanometers.

7. An electrode comprising:

a plurality of support filaments coupled to a conductive substrate;

a binder material that holds at least a portion of the plurality of support filaments in proximity to the conductive substrate;

an intercalation material dispersed with the plurality of support filaments, wherein the intercalation material adsorbs charge carriers into a bulk of the intercalation material and the intercalation material is configured to undergo a volume expansion responsive to adsorbing charge carriers into the bulk of the intercalation material; and

a barrier disposed on at least a portion of the intercalation material, wherein the barrier interacts with a charge carrier via a faradaic interaction.

8. The electrode of claim 7 , wherein the intercalation material comprises SiO 2 .

9. The electrode of claim 7 , wherein the barrier is configured to interact with the charge carriers at a first reaction potential and the intercalation material is configured to adsorb the charge carriers into the bulk of the intercalation material at a second reaction potential.

10. The electrode of claim 7 , wherein the barrier comprises carbon.

11. The electrode of claim 7 , wherein the intercalation material comprises particles having a size in a range of between 0.1 μm and 29 μm.

12. The electrode of claim 7 , wherein the binder disposed on at least a portion of the intercalation material comprises surface effect dominant sites.

13. The electrode of claim 12 , wherein the surface effect dominant sites comprise nanoparticles.

14. The electrode of claim 13 , wherein the nanoparticles comprise transition metal oxides, metal nitrides, activated carbon, graphene, graphite, titanate crystalline silicon, tin, germanium, metal hydrides, iron phosphates, polyaniline, mesophase carbon or a mixture of two or more thereof.
