Abstract

Imaging systems and methods are provided for detecting objects that may be hidden under clothing, ingested, inserted, or otherwise concealed on or in a person's body. An imaging assembly, e.g., X-ray source and X-ray detector, and mechanisms, e.g., a translational mechanism for vertically moving the imaging assembly, may be configured to reduce the overall form factor of such imaging systems, while still retaining an ability to perform full/complete imaging of a subject.

Claims (25)

1. A system comprising:

an X-ray source emitting an X-ray fan beam;

an X-ray detector detecting the X-ray fan beam emitted from the X-ray source;

a connecting member operatively connecting the X-ray source and the X-ray detector; and

a movement mechanism synchronously moving the X-ray source and the X-ray detector during a scanning cycle while operatively connected by the connecting member by translating the X-ray source within a path having a first range and translating the X-ray detector within a second path having a second range, the second range exceeding the first range, a movement of the X-ray detector being greater than a movement of the X-ray source, the detection by the X-ray detector of the X-ray fan beam emitted from the X-ray source comprising perpendicular detection through at least a first portion of a subject in which an object is potentially concealed transitioning from the perpendicular detection to a non-perpendicular detection through a second portion of the subject, and from the non-perpendicular detection to the perpendicular detection through a third portion of the subject.

2. A system comprising:

an X-ray source emitting an X-ray fan beam;

an X-ray detector detecting the X-ray fan beam emitted from the X-ray source;

a connecting member operatively connecting the X-ray source and the X-ray detector; and

a movement mechanism synchronously moving the X-ray source and the X-ray detector during a scanning cycle while operatively connected by the connecting member by translating the X-ray source within a path having a first range and translating the X-ray detector within a second path having a second range, the second range exceeding the first range, a movement of the X-ray detector being greater than a movement of the X-ray source, the detection by the X-ray detector of the X-ray fan beam emitted from the X-ray source comprising perpendicular detection through at least a first portion of a subject in which an object is potentially concealed, and transitioning from a non-perpendicular detection to the perpendicular detection through a third portion of the subject.

3. The system of claim 1 , where the movement mechanism synchronously moves the X-ray source and the X-ray detector to effectuate the movement from the perpendicular detection to the non-perpendicular detection through the second portion of the subject, the second portion of the subject corresponding to a portion within the second range that exceeds a first end of the first range.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the X-ray source is angled such that the X-ray source remains in a geometric alignment with the X-ray detector.

5. The system of claim 1 or 2 , wherein the X-ray source is angled such that the X-ray source remains in a geometric alignment with the X-ray detector.

6. The system of claim 1 or 2 , wherein the translational mechanism is configured to move the X-ray source to a location within the first range through at least the first portion of the subject and move the X-ray detector to a location within the second range through at least the first portion of the subject, wherein the location within the first range and the location within the second range are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the subject through at least the first portion.

7. The system of claim 1 or 2 , wherein the movement mechanism is configured to independently move the X-ray source and the X-ray detector.

8. The system of claim 1 or 2 , wherein the movement mechanism is configured to translate the X-ray detector and the X-ray source.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the movement mechanism is configured to rotate the X-ray source, wherein a translation of the X-ray source is greater than a rotation of the X-ray source.

10. The system of claim 1 or 2 , wherein the movement mechanism synchronously moves the X-ray source and the X-ray detector to effectuate the perpendicular detection through the first portion of the subject, the first portion of the subject corresponding to a portion within both of the first and second ranges.

11. The system of claim 10 , where the movement mechanism synchronously moves the X-ray source and the X-ray detector to effectuate the movement from the non-perpendicular detection to the perpendicular detection through the third portion of the subject, the third portion of the subject corresponding to a portion within the second range that exceeds a second end of the first range.

12. A system comprising:

an X-ray source emitting an X-ray fan beam;

an X-ray detector detecting the X-ray fan beam emitted from the X-ray source;

a connecting member operatively connecting the X-ray source and the X-ray detector; and

a movement mechanism synchronously moving the X-ray source and the X-ray detector during a scanning cycle while operatively connected by the connecting member, a movement of the X-ray detector being greater than a movement of the X-ray source, the detection by the X-ray detector of the X-ray fan beam emitted from the X-ray source comprising perpendicular detection through at least a first portion of a subject in which an object is potentially concealed, wherein the movement mechanism comprises a first cable and a second cable, the first cable attached to the X-ray detector at a first terminus and a first counterweight device at a second terminus, the second cable attached to the X-ray source at a first terminus and a second counterweight device at a second terminus, wherein the first cable is threaded on a first pulley and the second cable is threaded on a second pulley.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the movement mechanism comprises a first linear actuator and a second linear actuator, the first linear actuator configured to effectuate movement of the X-ray source via the first cable, the second linear actuator configured to effectuate movement of the X-ray detector via the second cable, wherein the movement mechanism is configured to move the X-ray detector and the X-ray source at a common rate through at least the portion of the subject.
