Circular stapling instruments
A circular stapling instrument including a stapling forming assembly that is actuated independently from actuation of the cutting assembly is provided. The instrument includes a handle assembly, an elongate body extending from the handle assembly, a cartridge assembly mounted on a distal end of the elongate body. The cartridge assembly includes a pusher assembly and a knife assembly. The knife assembly is selectively fixed relative to the pusher assembly.
1. A method of stapling tissue comprising:
simultaneously advancing a pusher assembly and a knife pusher of a surgical stapling instrument without advancing a knife during a staple forming stroke;
retracting the pusher assembly and the knife pusher;
waiting until a predetermined condition is achieved; and
after waiting until the predetermined condition is achieved, advancing the pusher assembly and the knife pusher in a cutting stroke in which the knife is advanced.
2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein advancing the pusher assembly and the knife pusher during the staple forming stroke causes an ejection of staples from the surgical stapling instrument and a forming of the staples against an anvil.
3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein retracting the pusher assembly and the knife pusher includes retracting the pusher assembly to a location proximal of an initial location of the pusher assembly.
4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the knife pusher does not engage the knife during the staple forming stroke.
5. The method according to claim 1 , further including engaging the knife pusher with the knife during the cutting stroke.
6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein waiting until the predetermined condition is achieved includes waiting a predetermined amount of time.
7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein waiting until the predetermined condition is achieved includes waiting until stapled tissue relaxes a predetermined amount.
8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein advancing the pusher assembly and the knife pusher includes engaging fingers of the knife pusher with the knife.
9. The method according to claim 1 , further including adjusting a stroke of the pusher assembly to vary a staple crimp height.
10. The method according to claim 1 , further including collecting data in a controller.
11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the data includes at least one of staple forming forces and knife cutting forces.
12. The method according to claim 1 , further including establishing a dwell time between staple formation and tissue cutting.
13. A method of stapling tissue comprising:
simultaneously advancing a pusher assembly and a knife pusher of a surgical stapling instrument a first distance during a staple forming stroke;
retracting the pusher assembly and the knife pusher a second distance greater than the first distance; and
readvancing the pusher assembly and the knife pusher a third distance during a cutting stroke in which a knife is advanced.
14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein advancing the pusher assembly and the knife pusher during the staple forming stroke causes an ejection of staples from the surgical stapling instrument.
15. The method according to claim 13 , wherein simultaneously advancing the pusher assembly and the knife pusher includes moving the knife pusher relative to the knife.
16. The method according to claim 13 , further including engaging the knife pusher with the knife during the cutting stroke.
17. The method according to claim 13 , wherein waiting until a predetermined condition is achieved includes waiting a predetermined amount of time.
18. A method of stapling tissue comprising:
simultaneously advancing a pusher assembly and a knife pusher of a surgical stapling instrument during a staple forming stroke to eject staples from the surgical stapling instrument;
retracting the pusher assembly and the knife pusher;
readvancing the pusher assembly and the knife pusher; and
engaging a knife during the readvancing of the pusher assembly and the knife pusher to cause advancing of the knife.
19. The method according to claim 18 , wherein simultaneously advancing the pusher assembly and the knife pusher includes moving the knife pusher relative to the knife.
20. The method according to claim 18 , further including engaging the knife pusher with the knife during a cutting stroke.
