Diffusion barriers for metallic superconducting wires
In various embodiments, superconducting wires incorporate diffusion barriers composed of Ta alloys that resist internal diffusion and provide superior mechanical strength to the wires.
1. A superconducting wire possessing diffusion resistance and mechanical strength, the superconducting wire comprising:
a wire matrix comprising Cu;
a plurality of composite filaments disposed within the wire matrix; and
only a single stabilizing element comprising (i) an alloy of Ta and W, or (ii) an alloy of Nb and at least one of Hf, Ti, Zr, Ta, V, Y, Mo, or W,
wherein:
the stabilizing element is disposed at a radial center of the wire,
each composite filament comprises (i) a plurality of Nb-based monofilaments and (ii) a cladding comprising Cu surrounding the plurality of monofilaments, and
the stabilizing element extends through an axial dimension of the superconducting wire.
2. The wire of claim 1 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises an alloy of Ta and W.
3. The wire of claim 1 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises a Ta alloy containing 0.2%-10% W.
