Abstract

Waste water is remanufactured with ozone in a series of mixing vessels. The ozone is dispersed to both a top and a bottom portion of each mixing vessel, but in different amounts. This creates an electrical potential difference across the height of each mixing vessel which significantly improves the oxidation of organic carbon-based impurities and eliminates H 2 S and bacteria. Sludge and solids floating to the top of each mixing vessels are removed, as well as sludge and solids settling to the bottom of the mixing vessels. When oil and gas well waste water is treated in this manner, the resulting treated water is purified and has a high salt content suitable for oil or gas well injection.

Claims (26)

1. A process for treating wastewater containing organic impurities, the process comprising:

in a series of mixing vessels, continuously treating wastewater with ozone, wherein ozone is dispersed through inline venturi mixers into said wastewater entering an upper portion of each mixing vessel, and additional ozone is concurrently dispersed into said wastewater in a lower portion of each mixing vessel;

continual or cyclic removal of the organic impurities as sludge and solid contaminants floating to the top of each mixing vessel and of sludge and solid contaminants settling to the bottom of each mixing vessel; and

withdrawing said wastewater after removal of the organic impurities from a final mixing vessel in the series of mixing vessels, wherein greater than 96% by weight of the organic impurities have been removed.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein a greater amount of ozone is added to said wastewater entering the upper portion of the mixing vessel relative to the additional ozone dispersed into waste water in the lower portion of the mixing vessel.

3. The process of claim 2 , wherein said wastewater comprises wastewater from oil or gas wells.

4. The process of claim 3 , further including the step of separating crude oil from said wastewater prior to treating said wastewater with ozone in the series of mixing vessels.

5. The process of claim 3 , further including the step of filtering said wastewater to remove solids prior to treating said wastewater with ozone in the series of mixing vessels.

6. The process of claim 3 , wherein the ozone is added in sufficient quantity to kill greater than 95% of bacteria in said wastewater.

7. The process of claim 3 , further comprising recycling of remanufactured water for oil or gas well injection.

8. The process of claim 1 , further including filtering said wastewater to remove solids prior to treating said wastewater with ozone in the series of mixing vessels.

9. The process of claim 1 , wherein the ozone is added in sufficient quantity to kill greater than 95% of bacteria in said wastewater.

10. The process of claim 1 , further including the step of separating emulsified oils from said wastewater prior to treating said wastewater with ozone in the series of mixing vessels.

11. The process of claim 1 , wherein said wastewater comprises wastewater from oil or gas wells.

12. The process of claim 11 , further including the step of separating crude oil from said wastewater prior to treating said wastewater with ozone in the series of mixing vessels.

13. The process of claim 11 , further including the step of filtering said wastewater to remove solids prior to treating said wastewater with ozone in the series of mixing vessels.

14. The process of claim 11 , wherein the ozone is added in sufficient quantity to kill greater than 95% of bacteria in said wastewater.

15. The process of claim 11 , further comprising recycling of remanufactured water for oil or gas well injection.

16. A process for treating water containing organic impurities, the process comprising:

in a series of mixing vessels, continuously treating water containing organic impurities with ozone, wherein ozone is dispersed through inline venturi mixers into said water containing organic impurities entering an upper portion of each mixing vessel, and additional ozone is concurrently dispersed into said water in a lower portion of each mixing vessel;

continual or cyclic removal of the organic impurities as sludge and solid contaminants floating to the top of each mixing vessel and of sludge and solid contaminants settling to the bottom of each mixing vessel; and

withdrawing said water after removal of the organic impurities from a final mixing vessel in the series of mixing vessels, wherein greater than 96% by weight of the organic impurities have been removed.

17. A process for treating wastewater containing organic impurities, the process comprising:

in a series of mixing vessels, continuously treating wastewater with ozone, wherein ozone is dispersed through inline venturi mixers into said wastewater entering an upper portion of each mixing vessel, and additional ozone is concurrently dispersed into said wastewater in a lower portion of each mixing vessel using mixer/injectors that create a field with a lesser oxidation reduction potential than the inline venturi mixers;

continual or cyclic removal of the organic impurities as sludge and solid contaminants floating to the top of each mixing vessel and of sludge and solid contaminants settling to the bottom of each mixing vessel; and

withdrawing said wastewater after removal of the organic impurities from a final mixing vessel in the series of mixing vessels, wherein greater than 96% by weight of the organic impurities have been removed.
