Abstract

A method of managing inventory allocations includes the step of receiving, in a data processing apparatus, data relating to the sale of items of inventory allocated to respective re-sellers. The date is processed to obtain data relating to sales performance of one or more of the respective re-sellers. The method includes adjusting a price for which inventory allocated to that respective re-seller is to be sold by depending on said data relating to the sales performance of the respective re-sellers and/or re-allocation inventory items from that said respective re-seller to other respective re-sellers. The invention extends to a software product and to a system.

Claims (36)

1. A computer-implemented method of managing inventory allocations, the computer-implemented method comprising the steps of:

receiving sale data cyclically, in near real time, from respective distribution channels and relating to sale of inventory items allocated to the respective distribution channels;

processing the sale data cyclically, the processing of the sale data including carrying out calculations to obtain a performance rating for each of the respective distribution channels;

querying whether the performance rating of each of the respective distribution channels is greater than a performance rating of other distribution channels; and

based on the query, carrying out at least one of the following steps:

adjusting a price of inventory items allocated to each of the respective distribution channels; and

re-allocating inventory items to or from said each of the respective distribution channels from or to the other distribution channels.

2. The computer-implemented method as claimed in claim 1 , which includes the step of storing inventory item data and distribution channel data in a database.

3. The computer-implemented method as claimed in claim 2 , which includes the step of associating distribution channels with inventory items.

4. The computer-implemented method as claimed in claim 1 , in which the sale data is in a form of data relating to at least one of the following: sale price of each inventory item, rate of commission for the sale of each inventory item and number of inventory items sold over a predetermined length of time.

5. The computer-implemented method as claimed in claim 1 , in which the step of processing the sale data includes a determination of whether or not a supply of inventory items exceeds demand or vice versa per distribution channel.

6. The computer-implemented method as claimed in claim 1 , in which the step of processing the sale data includes the step of calculating a sale rate index for each distribution channel, in a form of a ratio of a number of items sold in a predetermined time to a number of items available for sale in that distribution channel.

7. The computer-implemented method as claimed in claim 6 , which includes the steps of, for each distribution channel:

setting a predetermined price of the inventory items;

calculating the sale rate index;

querying whether demand exceeds supply; and

if demand does not exceed supply, decreasing price by a predetermined percentage, or, if demand does exceed supply, comparing the performance rating of the distribution channel with other distribution channels.

8. The computer-implemented method as claimed in claim 7 , which includes the steps of, for each distribution channel:

querying whether the performance rating of the distribution channel is greater than the other distribution channels; and

if the performance rating of the distribution channel is greater than the performance rating of the other distribution channels, removing inventory items from lower performing channels and adding them to the distribution channel.

9. A computing device comprising:

a memory; and

at least one processor configured to perform a method for managing inventory allocations, the method comprising:

receiving sale data cyclically, in real time, from respective distribution channels and relating to sale of inventory items allocated to the respective distribution channels;

processing the sale data cyclically, the processing of the sale data including carrying out calculations to obtain a performance rating for each of the respective distribution channels;

querying whether the performance rating of each of the respective distribution channels is greater than a performance rating of other distribution channels; and

based on the query, carrying out at least one of the following steps:

adjusting a price of inventory items allocated to each of the respective distribution channels; and

re-allocating inventory items to or from said each of the respective distribution channels from or to the other distribution channels.

10. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, the non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing computer instructions to be implemented on at least one computing device including at least one processor, the computer instructions when executed by the at least one processor cause the at least one computing device to perform a method for managing inventory allocations, the method comprising:

receiving sale data cyclically, in real time, from respective distribution channels and relating to sale of inventory items allocated to the respective distribution channels;

processing the sale data cyclically, the processing of the sale data including carrying out calculations to obtain a performance rating for each of the respective distribution channels;

querying whether the performance rating of each of the respective distribution channels is greater than a performance rating of other distribution channels; and

based on the query, carrying out at least one of the following steps:

adjusting a price of inventory items allocated to each of the respective distribution channels; and

re-allocating inventory items to or from said each of the respective distribution channels from or to the other distribution channels.
