Abstract

A humidification canister for humidifying a breathing gas, the humidification canister includes a fluid supply configured to supply a fluid and a first gas flow path in fluid communication with the fluid supply. A first gas flow path is configured to humidify the breathing gas with the fluid. A second gas flow path at least partially surrounds the first gas flow path. A method of insulating a breathing gas in a humidification canister using a gas is also disclosed.

Claims (32)

1. An apparatus for providing breathing gas to a patient comprising:

a base unit configured to provide a first flow of gas and a second flow of gas;

a humidifier configured to be coupled to the base unit and including:

a first gas flow path configured to receive and humidify the first flow of gas;

a fluid supply reservoir having a generally circular cross section having a central opening therein and configured to receive a flow of fluid for humidification;

a second gas flow path configured to receive the second flow of gas and to be coupled to the humidifier to insulate at least a portion of first gas flow path, the second gas flow path extending through the central opening of the fluid supply reservoir;

a membrane at least partially separating the first gas flow path and the fluid supply reservoir; and

an insulation chamber at least partially surrounding the first gas flow path and configured to receive the second flow of gas; and

a delivery tube assembly configured to be coupled to the humidifier and including a first lumen configured to be in fluid communication with the first gas flow path and a second lumen at least partially surrounding the first lumen and configured to insulate the first lumen.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the membrane is a flat sheet membrane.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a gas heater configured to heat the second flow of gas.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the gas heater is upstream of the humidifier.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the humidifier is configured to be releasably coupled to the base unit.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the base unit further comprises a gas source.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the gas source is a blower.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the blower is configured to provide gas at a flowrate between 1 LPM and 150 LPM.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the base unit further comprises a flow divider in fluid communication with the gas source and configured to divide an initial flow of gas provided by the gas source into the first flow and the second flow.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the flow divider comprises a first compartment having a first discharge port and a second compartment having a second discharge port.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the second discharge port is coaxially aligned with the first discharge port.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the second compartment comprises a heater configured to heat the second flow of gas.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein, when the humidifier is coupled to the base unit, the first discharge port is in fluid communication with the first gas flow path and the second discharge port is in fluid communication with the insulation chamber.

14. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the gas source provides at least one of oxygen or air.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first lumen and the second lumen of the delivery tube assembly are adjacent.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first lumen is an inner lumen and the second lumen is an outer lumen, such that the second lumen concentrically surrounds the first lumen.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the delivery tube assembly further comprises a plurality of fins extending between an exterior of the inner lumen and an interior of the outer lumen.

18. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second lumen is configured to receive the second flow of gas from the insulation chamber.

19. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a nasal cannula coupled to the delivery tube assembly and configured to convey the first flow of gas from the first lumen to a patient.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the cannula comprises two nasal prongs configured to extend into the nares of the patient.

21. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a controller configured to control at least one of a flowrate, a temperature, or a humidity of the first flow of gas.

22. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the insulation chamber completely surrounds a circumference of the first gas flow path.

23. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the insulation chamber at least partially surrounds the first gas flow path along an entire length of the first gas flow path.

24. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the insulation chamber at least partially surrounds the first gas flow path along at least a part of a length of the first gas flow path.
