Abstract

An axial field rotary energy device with a PCB stator having interleaved PCBs is disclosed. The device can include rotors that have magnets and an axis of rotation. A stator assembly can be located axially between the rotors to operate electrical phases. The stator assembly can include PCB panels. Each PCB panel can have layers, and each PCB panel can be designated to one of the electrical phases. Each electrical phase of the stator assembly can be provided by a plurality of the PCB panels. In addition, the PCB panels for each electrical phase can be axially spaced apart from and intermingled with each other.

Claims (25)

1. An axial field rotary energy device, comprising:

rotors having an axis of rotation, and each rotor comprises a magnet; and

a stator assembly located axially between the rotors and configured to operate a plurality of electrical phases, the stator assembly comprises a plurality of printed circuit board (PCB) panels, each PCB panel comprises a plurality of layers, the layers comprise coils that are rotationally aligned relative to the axis of rotation, and stacked relative to each other in an axial direction, each PCB panel is designated to one of the electrical phases, each electrical phase of the stator assembly is configured to be provided by a plurality of the PCB panels, and the PCB panels for each electrical phase are axially spaced apart from and intermingled with each other.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the PCB panels for each electrical phase are uniformly axially interleaved with each other in a repeating pattern.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein every PCB panel comprises a same number of layers.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein a first layer in at least one of the PCB panels comprises coils with a first number of turns, and a second layer comprises coils with a second number of turns that differs from the first number of turns.

5. The device of claim 3 , wherein a first layer in at least one of the PCB panels comprises both coils with a first number of turns and coils with a second number of turns that differs from the first number of turns.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein a second layer said at least one of the PCB panels comprises both coils with a third number of turns and coils with a fourth number of turns that differs from the third number of turns.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the PCB panels comprises a different number of layers than another PCB panel.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein a first layer in at least one of the PCB panels comprises coils with a first number of turns, and a second layer comprises coils with a second number of turns that differs from the first number of turns.

9. The device of claim 7 , wherein a first layer in a selected PCB panel comprises both coils with a first number of turns and coils with a second number of turns that differs from the first number of turns.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein a second layer in the selected PCB panels comprises both coils with a third number of turns and coils with a fourth number of turns that differs from the third number of turns.

11. An axial field rotary energy device, comprising:

rotors having an axis of rotation, and each rotor comprises a magnet;

a stator assembly located axially between the rotors and configured to operate a plurality of electrical phases, the stator assembly comprises a plurality of printed circuit board (PCB) panels, each PCB panel comprises a plurality of layers, each PCB panel is designated to one of the electrical phases, each electrical phase of the stator assembly is configured to be provided by a plurality of the PCB panels, and the PCB panels for each electrical phase are axially spaced apart from and intermingled with each other; and wherein

the stator assembly comprises discrete, PCB radial segments that are mechanically and electrically coupled together to form the stator assembly.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the PCB panels for each electrical phase are uniformly axially interleaved with each other in a repeating pattern.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein every PCB panel comprises a same number of layers.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein a first layer in at least one of the PCB panels comprises coils with a first number of turns, and a second layer comprises coils with a second number of turns that differs from the first number of turns.

15. The device of claim 13 , wherein a first layer in at least one of the PCB panels comprises both coils with a first number of turns and coils with a second number of turns that differs from the first number of turns.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein a second layer said at least one of the PCB panels comprises both coils with a third number of turns and coils with a fourth number of turns that differs from the third number of turns.

17. The device of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the PCB panels comprises a different number of layers than another PCB panel.

18. The device of claim 17 , wherein a first layer in at least one of the PCB panels comprises coils with a first number of turns, and a second layer comprises coils with a second number of turns that differs from the first number of turns.

19. The device of claim 17 , wherein a first layer in a selected PCB panel comprises both coils with a first number of turns and coils with a second number of turns that differs from the first number of turns.
