Abstract

A tissue visualization system comprises a flexible elongate shaft through which a lumen extends. The system also comprises a pliable visualization device coupled to a distal portion of the flexible elongate shaft. The pliable visualization device includes a chamber configured to receive a fluid. The system also comprises a piercing instrument configured to extend through the lumen and to penetrate a surface of the pliable visualization device.

Claims (32)

1. A tissue visualization system, comprising:

a flexible elongate shaft through which a lumen extends;

a pliable visualization device coupled to a distal portion of the flexible elongate shaft, the pliable visualization device including a chamber configured to receive a fluid; and

a piercing instrument configured to extend through the lumen and to penetrate a surface of the pliable visualization device,

wherein the pliable visualization device has a first conforming configuration when the pliable visualization device is in contact with a first location of a tissue region and a second conforming configuration when the pliable visualization device is in contact with a second location of the tissue region and

wherein the piercing instrument is configured to form a first puncture aperture in the pliable visualization device when the pliable visualization device is in contact with the first location of the tissue region and to form a second puncture aperture in the pliable visualization device when the pliable visualization device is in contact with the second location of the tissue region.

2. The tissue visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the piercing instrument includes a cannulated needle.

3. The tissue visualization system of claim 2 , wherein the piercing instrument includes a sharpened distal end.

4. The tissue visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the pliable visualization device includes an expandable membrane surrounding the chamber and wherein the surface is a distal surface of the expandable membrane.

5. The tissue visualization system of claim 1 , wherein penetrating the surface of the pliable visualization device includes piercing the surface to form the first puncture aperture.

6. The tissue visualization system of claim 5 , wherein the first puncture aperture forms a passage for flow of the fluid to an area distal of the pliable visualization device.

7. The tissue visualization system of claim 1 further comprising:

an imaging element positioned within the pliable visualization device and configured to provide images of an open area within the chamber.

8. The tissue visualization system of claim 7 , wherein the imaging element is coupled to an inner surface of the pliable visualization device.

9. The tissue visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the surface of the pliable visualization device is formed of a transparent material.

10. A method comprising:

positioning a tissue visualization system in a tissue region to be visualized, the tissue visualization system including a flexible elongate shaft through which a lumen extends and a pliable visualization device coupled to a distal portion of the flexible elongate shaft

introducing a fluid into a chamber of the pliable visualization device;

extending a piercing instrument from the lumen and into the chamber;

penetrating a surface of the pliable visualization device with the piercing instrument to form a first puncture aperture; and

penetrating the surface of the pliable visualization device with the piercing instrument to form a second puncture aperture.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the piercing instrument includes a cannulated needle.

12. The method claim 11 , wherein penetrating a surface of the pliable visualization device includes penetrating the surface with a sharpened distal end of the piercing instrument.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

inserting a secondary instrument through the piercing instrument and through the first puncture aperture.

14. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

releasing fluid from the chamber through the first puncture aperture to an area distal of the pliable visualization device.

15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

releasing fluid from the chamber through the second puncture aperture to an area distal of the pliable visualization device.

16. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

capture images of an open area within the chamber with an imaging element positioned within the pliable visualization device.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the imaging element is coupled to an inner surface of the pliable visualization device.
