Abstract

A radio frequency identification (RFID) tag includes a power harvesting circuit that operates generate power for the RFID tag from a continuous wave of a radio frequency (RF) signal. The RFID tag further includes a tuning circuit that is tuned based on a capacitance setting, where the capacitance setting is indicative of a power level of the power. The RFID tag further includes a processing module operably coupled to the tuning circuit, where the processing module operates to generate the capacitance setting to obtain a desired power level for the power.

Claims (25)

1. A radio frequency identification (RFID) tag comprises:

a power harvesting circuit operable to generate power for the RFID tag from a continuous wave of a radio frequency (RF) signal;

a tuning circuit that is tuned based on a capacitance setting, wherein the capacitance setting is indicative of a power level of the power; and

a processing module operably coupled to the tuning circuit, wherein the processing module is operable to generate the capacitance setting to obtain a desired power level for the power.

2. The RFID tag of claim 1 , wherein the tuning circuit comprises:

an inductance associated with an antenna; and

a variable capacitor operably coupled with the inductance to form a tank circuit, wherein capacitance of the variable capacitor is set based on the capacitance setting to change a resonant frequency of the tank circuit.

3. The RFID tag of claim 2 , wherein the inductance associated with the antenna comprises one or more of:

an inductor; and

the antenna.

4. The RFID tag of claim 1 further comprises:

an environmental sensor proximally positioned to the tuning circuit, wherein, when the environmental sensor is exposed to an environmental condition, a characteristic of the tuning circuit is effected, and where the processing module generates the capacitance setting to substantial mitigate an effect on the characteristic due to the environmental condition.

5. The RFID tag of claim 4 , wherein the environmental sensor comprises:

a collecting section; and

a transporting section, wherein, when the RFID tag is positioned proximal to an object, at least a portion of the collecting section is within a remote area of the object.

6. The RFID tag of claim 1 further comprises:

a radio frequency (RF) front end, wherein the RF front end comprises:

an antenna;

a receiver section coupled to the antenna; and

a transmitter section coupled to the antenna.

7. The RFID tag of claim 6 , wherein the processing module is further operable to:

generate a value representative of the capacitance setting; and

transmit, via the antenna, the value within an outbound RF signal.

8. The RFID tag of claim 1 further comprises:

a memory, wherein the processing module is operable to generate a digital value representative of one or more of the power and the capacitance setting, and wherein the processing module stores the digital value in the memory.
