Abstract

Disclosed is a method to produce composite materials, which contain customized mixes of nano- and/or micro-particles with tailored electromagnetic spectral properties, structural elements based thereon, in particular layers, but also bulk materials including inhomogeneous bulk materials. In some embodiments the IR-reflectivity is enhanced predominantly independently of reflectivity for visible wavelength. The enhanced IR-reflectivity is achieved by combining spectral properties from a plurality of nano- and/or micro-particles of distinct size distribution, shape distribution, chemical composition, crystal structure, and crystallinity distribution. This enables to approximate desired target spectra better than know solutions, which comprise only a single type of particles and/or an uncontrolled natural size distribution. Furthermore disclosed are methods of manufacturing such materials, including ceramics, clay, and concrete, as well as applications related to design and construction of buildings or other confined spaces.

Claims (42)

1. A method, comprising

measuring a broadband spectral reflectance within the visible (VIS) and Near Infrared (NIR) range at one or more locations within the vicinity of an object;

providing a plurality of distinct populations of nano- or micro-particles and/or of nano- or micro-cavities, a first population of said plurality of distinct populations comprising at least one of distinct size distributions, shape distributions, chemical compositions, crystal structures, and crystallinity distributions, relative to a second population of said plurality of distinct populations;

forming a composite material comprising a mixture of the first population and the second population in a carrier material, the composite material having a selected composition ratio of the first population to the second population, and a selected density of the mixture relative to a carrier material such that resulting broadband spectral reflectance of said composite material approximates said measured broadband spectral reflectance at least within the VIS and NIR range; and

applying the composite material on a surface of the object within the vicinity of which the broadband spectral reflectance has been measured.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the resulting broadband spectral reflectance of said composite material approximates said measured broadband spectral reflectance as a result of interference effects between at least some of the nano- or micro-particles and/or nano- or micro-cavities of the plurality of distinct populations.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the resulting broadband spectral reflectance of said composite material approximates said measured broadband spectral reflectance as a result of interference effects between at least some of the nano- or micro-particles and/or nano- or micro-cavities of the plurality of distinct populations.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said applying the composite material on a surface comprises applying the composite material to a surface of a structure.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said applying the composite material on a surface comprises applying the composite material to a surface of a vehicle.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said applying the composite material on a surface comprises applying the composite material to a surface of an object.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the carrier material comprises a liquid.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the carrier material comprises a mineral, clay, cement, cementitious material, or concrete.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the carrier material comprises polymers.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composite material is determined by performing an optimization loop.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the optimization loop comprises:

taking portions of relative amounts c i [0,1] from each reservoir R i of a plurality of reservoirs R i corresponding to a plurality of said populations of nano- or micro-particles;

mixing said portions and embedding said mixture of said nano- or micro-particles in the carrier material thereby creating the composite material;

determining the broadband spectral properties of the composite material at least within VIS and NIR;

determining the deviation of the broadband spectral properties of the composite material and the measured broadband spectral reflectance within the vicinity of an object;

determining the composition vector j c of a mixture of said nano- or micro-particles based on portions j c i taken from each reservoir R i during a next iterative step j;

repeating these iterations until a criterion has been has been reached or surpassed; and

producing larger quantities of said composite for use.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first population and the second population comprise at least one of BaSO 4 , TiO 2 , ZnS, CaCO 3 , SiO 2 , or Al 2 O 3 .
