Abstract

A urinary catheter wetting apparatus ( 121 ) has a chamber defined by a forward section ( 123 ) opposite to a rearward section ( 125 ) each having an aperture ( 143,153 ) of which are axially aligned. A catheter tube is connected to a connector ( 161 ), the latter of which spans the chamber and initially seals the two apertures. The connector is slideable through the first facial surface ( 129 ) of forward section and the second end wall ( 131 ) of the rearward section so the catheter tube can be drawn through the chamber. A wetting applicator ( 151 ) holding a wetting agent is disposed in the chamber. Upon use, the connector passes through the chamber, applying pressure to the wetting applicator, thereby releasing the wetting agent from the wetting applicator and onto the catheter tube as it follows the connector through the chamber.

Claims (31)

1. A wetting device for a tube, comprising:

a) an enclosure enclosing a chamber having at least two apertures through which the tube can traverse;

b) a wetting applicator located in the chamber having an opening through which the tube can traverse;

c) a connector coupled to the tube and having a region with a diameter that is larger than a diameter of the opening of the wetting applicator;

wherein the wetting applicator is configured to release a wetting agent upon pressure applied from within the chamber to the wetting applicator by the connector;

further wherein, the enclosure comprises a port for adding the wetting agent to the wetting applicator.

2. The wetting device of claim 1 , wherein the tube is a medical tube and the medical tube is a catheter.

3. The wetting device of claim 1 , wherein the tube is a urinary catheter.

4. The wetting device of claim 3 , wherein the urinary catheter is suitable for insertion in a male urethra or a female urethra.

5. The wetting device of claim 1 , wherein the wetting applicator is compressible and the wetting applicator is infused with the wetting agent.

6. A system comprising a wetting device and a tube, the system comprising:

an enclosure enclosing a chamber having at least two apertures through which a tube can traverse;

a wetting applicator located in the chamber having an opening through which the tube can traverse; and

a connector connecting the tube to a funnel;

wherein the wetting applicator is configured to release a wetting agent upon pressure applied within the chamber to the wetting applicator;

wherein at least a region of the connector comprises a diameter that is larger than the diameter of the opening of the wetting applicator.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the connector is positioned within the wetting, device.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the connector has a first plug at a first end and a second plug at a second end, wherein the first plug and the second plug seal the wetting device until the connector is pulled through the wetting device.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the connector applies pressure to the wetting applicator to release the wetting agent as the tube is moved through the wetting device.

10. The system of claim 6 , further comprising a handling sleeve, wherein the handling sleeve extends over the tube as the tube is removed from the enclosure.

11. The system of claim 6 , comprising the wetting agent.

12. A method of using a wetting device, comprising:

providing an enclosure enclosing a chamber having at least two apertures through which a tube can traverse and a wetting applicator located in the chamber having an opening through which the tube can traverse, a connector coupled to the tube and having a region with a diameter that is larger than a diameter of the opening of the wetting applicator, wherein the wetting applicator is configured to release a wetting agent upon pressure applied within the chamber to the wetting applicator by the connector; and

removing the tube from a package and wetting the tube;

wherein the removing and wetting occurs substantially simultaneously.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein removing the tube from the package results in wetting the tube.

14. The method of claim 12 , further wherein a handling sleeve is substantially simultaneously extended over the tube as the wetting agent is distributed to the tube.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising adding the wetting agent to the wetting device through a port in the enclosure of the wetting device.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the method does not require adding the wetting agent to the wetting device.

17. The method of claim 12 , comprising opening the package and pulling the tube out of the package by a funnel, thereby wetting the tube.

18. The method of claim 12 , comprising inserting the tube into a urethra immediately after removing the tube from the package.
