Abstract

A laser light collecting assembly for a wireless power receiver. The assembly includes a compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) mirror and an optical to electrical converter. The CPC mirror has curved internal walls that define an inlet aperture and connect the inlet aperture to an outlet aperture. The inlet aperture may be larger than the outlet aperture. The internal walls may focus a majority of the laser light entering the inlet aperture to the outlet aperture. The optical to electrical converter may be positioned adjacent to the outlet aperture and configured to receive the laser light exiting the outlet aperture so as to convert optical power in the laser light to electrical power.

Claims (25)

1. A laser light collecting assembly for a wireless power receiver, comprising:

a compound parabolic concentrator mirror having curved internal walls defining and connecting an inlet aperture to an outlet aperture, the inlet aperture being larger than the outlet aperture, the internal walls focusing a majority of laser light entering the inlet aperture to the outlet aperture;

an optical to electrical converter positioned adjacent to the outlet aperture and configured to receive laser light exiting the outlet aperture and to convert optical energy in the laser light to electrical power; and

an optical element configured to seal off the internal walls of the compound parabolic concentrator mirror from an external environment, wherein the optical element is a Fresnel lens having a positive focal length configured to concentrate the laser light entering the inlet aperture to the optical to electrical converter and wherein the Fresnel lens has an inner most surface with a negative focal length configured to diffuse light reflected out of the compound parabolic concentrator.

2. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the Fresnel lens includes a scratch resistant coating.

3. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the Fresnel lens includes an antireflective coating.

4. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the Fresnel lens includes a hydrophobic coating.

5. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the Fresnel lens includes an oleophobic coating.

6. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the compound parabolic concentrator mirror is formed from a cube of optical plastic or glass.

7. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the laser light is in a near infrared wavelength, and wherein the internal walls are coated with a thin film reflective coating configured to reflect incident power in the near infrared wavelength.

8. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , the Fresnel lens is positioned adjacent to the inlet aperture, wherein the Fresnel lens includes an external surface facing a laser light source and the inner most surface faces the optical to electrical converter, wherein the compound parabolic concentrator mirror includes a ring of near infrared blackout material positioned near the inlet aperture and configured to prevent light reflection off the internal surface.

9. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , the Fresnel lens is positioned adjacent to the inlet aperture, wherein the Fresnel lens includes an external surface facing a laser light source and the inner most surface faces the optical to electrical converter, wherein the optical element includes a chamfered, metallic coated edge around the internal surface that is configured to bond to a corresponding surface of the compound parabolic concentrator mirror and form one of a non-hermetic seal, a semi-hermetic seal, or a fully hermetic seal between an inner volume of the compound parabolic concentrator mirror and an outside of the compound parabolic concentrator mirror.

10. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the Fresnel lens is positioned adjacent to the inlet aperture, wherein the Fresnel lens includes an external surface facing a laser light source and the inner most surface faces the optical to electrical converter, wherein the compound parabolic concentrator mirror includes a chamfered, metallic coated edge around the inlet aperture that is configured to bond to a corresponding surface of the optical element and form one of a non-hermetic seal, a semi-hermetic seal, or a fully hermetic seal between an inner volume of the compound parabolic concentrator mirror and an outside of the compound parabolic concentrator mirror.

11. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the compound parabolic concentrator mirror includes a shallow angled portion adjacent the inlet aperture that is configured to increase a field of view of the optical to electrical converter.

12. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the compound parabolic concentrator mirror includes a chamfered, metallic coated surface near the outlet aperture, and wherein a corresponding contact surface of the optical to electrical converter is non-conductive or insulative and is configured to allow bonding with an optical adhesive and to provide for thermal dissipation.

13. The laser light collecting assembly as recited in claim 1 , wherein the optical to electrical converter is a photodiode assembly.

14. A laser light collecting assembly for a wireless power receiver, comprising:

a compound parabolic concentrator mirror having curved internal walls defining and connecting an inlet aperture to an outlet aperture, the inlet aperture being larger than the outlet aperture, the internal walls focusing a majority of laser light entering the inlet aperture to the outlet aperture;

an optical to electrical converter positioned adjacent to the outlet aperture and configured to receive laser light exiting the outlet aperture and to convert optical energy in the laser light to electrical power;

an optical window positioned adjacent to the inlet aperture and configured to seal off the internal walls of the compound parabolic concentrator mirror from an external environment; and

wherein the optical window includes an internal surface facing the optical to electrical converter and an external surface facing a laser light source, wherein the compound parabolic concentrator mirror includes a ring of near infrared blackout material positioned near the inlet aperture and configured to prevent light reflection off the internal surface.
