Whitened tobacco composition
A method of preparing a whitened tobacco material is provided, the method including the steps of (i) extracting a tobacco material with an aqueous solution to give a tobacco pulp and a tobacco extract; (ii) treating the tobacco pulp with at least one of a caustic reagent and an oxidizing agent for a time and at a temperature sufficient to lighten the color of the tobacco pulp to give a whitened tobacco pulp; (iii) clarifying the tobacco extract to remove higher molecular weight components; and (iv) combining the whitened tobacco pulp with a clarified tobacco extract to form a whitened tobacco material. The whitened tobacco material can be isolated and incorporated into a smokeless tobacco product. The invention also provides a smokeless tobacco product incorporating a whitened tobacco material. The smokeless tobacco product may be a snus-type formulation contained within a sealed pouch.
1. A product comprising a translucent tobacco extract and a whitened tobacco pulp, wherein the product is configured for insertion into the mouth of a user and wherein the product comprises a moisture content of about 20 weight percent to about 55 weight percent.
2. The product of claim 1 , wherein the translucent tobacco extract is in the form of a distillate or a filtered tobacco extract.
3. The product of claim 1 , wherein the translucent tobacco extract is characterized by a low tobacco-specific nitrosamine content of about 150 ng/g or less.
4. The product of claim 1 , wherein the translucent tobacco extract is characterized by a low benzo[a]pyrene content of about 1 ng/g tobacco extract or less.
5. The product of claim 1 , wherein the translucent tobacco extract does not comprise any components having a molecular weight greater than about 1000 Da.
6. The product of claim 1 , further comprising at least one filler.
7. The product of claim 6 , wherein the at least one filler is selected from the group consisting of microcrystalline cellulose, corn starch, maltodextrin, dextrose, calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, lactose, mannitol, xylitol, sorbitol, and combinations thereof.
8. The product of claim 1 , further comprising a pH adjuster and wherein the product has a pH in the range of about 6.5 to about 9.
9. The product of claim 8 , wherein the pH adjuster is selected from the group consisting of metal hydroxides, metal carbonates, metal bicarbonates, and mixtures thereof.
10. The product of claim 8 , wherein the pH adjuster comprises sodium bicarbonate or citric acid.
11. The product of claim 1 , further comprising sodium chloride.
12. The product of claim 1 , further comprising a binder.
13. The product of claim 12 , wherein the binder is selected from the group consisting of sodium alginate, xanthan gum, starch-based binders, gum arabic, pectin, carrageenan, pullulan, zein, and combinations thereof.
14. The product of claim 1 , further comprising a humectant.
15. The product of claim 14 , wherein the humectant comprises propylene glycol.
16. The product of claim 1 , wherein the whitened tobacco pulp and the translucent tobacco extract are present in a weight ratio of about 1:1 to about 10:1.
17. The product of claim 1 , wherein the whitened tobacco pulp and the translucent tobacco extract are present in a weight ratio of about 1.5:1 to about 3:1.
18. The product of claim 1 , wherein the whitened tobacco pulp comprises a pulp of tobacco lamina, or a tobacco lamina and stem mixture.
19. The product of claim 1 , further comprising sodium chloride, a metal bicarbonate, a humectant, and at least one filler selected from microcrystalline cellulose and xylitol, wherein the product is in granulated or particulate form.
20. The product of claim 19 , wherein the metal bicarbonate comprises sodium bicarbonate, and the humectant comprises propylene glycol.
