Abstract

A patient interface comprises a frame, a headgear, a manifold and two nasal prongs. The frame may be recessed from the face of the patient, and preferably from the manifold so that the manifold may deform or move with respect to the face of the patient. The manifold may be further configured to be compliant in the direction of engagement with the patient's face, such as in the anterior direction. These features may allow the manifold to engage with the face of the patient, such as the upper lip, without exerting a significant pressure which may lead to patient discomfort. The manifold may also be configured to be rotatable with respect to the frame, for example by a grip feature which may be configured to be held in one hand for rotation.

Claims (11)

1. A patient interface for delivery of a flow of air into one or more nares of a patient, the patient interface comprising:

a plenum chamber configured to receive a flow of air;

a prong configured to deliver the flow of air from the plenum chamber into a naris of the patient; and

a frame coupled to the plenum chamber, the frame being configured to engage a head of the patient in use for locating the plenum chamber with respect to the naris of the patient,

wherein the plenum chamber and a central portion of the frame are spaced apart across a recess by a first distance when the plenum chamber and the frame are fully coupled to each other, and

wherein the plenum chamber is configured to, in use, be moved into the recess toward the central portion so that the central portion and the plenum chamber are spaced apart by a second distance less than the first distance.

2. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein the plenum chamber comprises a flexible material, and the frame comprises a rigid material configured to act as a stop for the plenum chamber when the plenum chamber moves into the recess.

3. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein the first distance as measured between a posterior surface of the frame and an exterior surface of the plenum chamber is between approximately 1 mm and 4 mm.

4. The patient interface of claim 1 , wherein the frame includes a side portion and a central portion, the side portion of the frame is connected to the plenum chamber proximate to an end of the plenum chamber and limits translation of the end of the plenum chamber in an anterior direction, and the central portion of the frame diverges from the side portion of the frame in order to be disengaged from a central portion of the plenum chamber across the recess, wherein a central portion of the plenum chamber is configured to move in the anterior direction toward the central portion of the frame so that the central portion of the plenum chamber and the central portion of the frame are spaced apart by the second distance.

5. The patient interface of claim 1 , further comprising a barrel coupled to the plenum chamber, wherein the barrel is rotatably engaged with the frame in use, and wherein the plenum chamber is rotatable relative to the frame in use.

6. The patient interface of claim 5 , wherein the barrel includes one of notches and protrusions and the frame includes the other of the notches and the protrusions, wherein the notches are configured to engage the protrusions so that relative rotation between the frame and the plenum chamber is discretely variable.
