Abstract

An anti-ballistic protection system for protecting a space in a building or vehicle comprising a protective barrier including one or more sheets of a laminated material having a plurality of layers of lightweight, flexible, ballistic resistant material such as woven sheets which are secured together using a glue, heat weld, or stitching. The system may include an automated control system operably configured to cause a change in state of the barrier from a retracted state to a protective deployed state, which may include a sensing system operably configured to detect a threatening event, wherein the sensing system upon sensing the threatening event triggers the barrier to transition from the retracted state to the deployed protective state such that in the protective state, the barriers are adapted to be resistant to penetration by high-speed ballistic objects such as bullets.

Claims (38)

1. A window blind system for protecting an interior space from ballistic objects using a deployable barrier, comprising:

a mounting structure configured for storing the deployable barrier in a retracted position in or at an interior window frame of a window;

the deployable barrier comprising a plurality of layers of flexible contiguous sheets of woven anti-ballistic material stacked on top of each other secured together into a flexible laminated sheet; and

a deployment mechanism configured to drop the deployable barrier into a deployed position such that the barrier protects the space from entry by a ballistic object through the window, said barrier being configured to flex and move in response to impact from the ballistic object to absorb energy from the ballistic object to further protect said space from the ballistic object, wherein

said ballistic object includes shrapnel and/or a bullet deployed by a weapon.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a sensing system for detecting threat data indicating a ballistic threat exists; and

a control system configured to receive said threat data from said sensing system, said control system operably configured to trigger said deployment mechanism to automatically deploy said barrier into the deployed position based on the received threat data.

3. The system according to claim 2 , wherein automatically deploy said barrier into the deployed position includes activating or deactivating an electromagnet.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a panic button configured to trigger said deployment mechanism to deploy said barrier into the deployed position when actuated.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a remote controller configured to wirelessly trigger said deployment mechanism to deploy said barrier into the deployed position when actuated.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said flexible anti-ballistic material includes a synthetic fiber of high tensile strength.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said flexible anti-ballistic material includes a fabric treated with boron.

8. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said flexible anti-ballistic material includes an ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene.

9. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said flexible anti-ballistic material includes a transparent polycarbonate of high impact strength.

10. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a sensing system for detecting threat data indicating a ballistic threat exists; and

a control system configured to receive said threat data from said sensing system, said control system operably configured to trigger said deployment mechanism to automatically deploy said barrier in a manner that secures sides and/or a bottom of said barrier to a wall and/or floor, respectively.

11. The system according to claim 10 , wherein said barrier is secured to the wall and/or the floor using a magnet and/or electromagnet.

12. The system according to claim 10 , wherein said barrier is secured to the floor using a latching mechanism.

13. The system according to claim 1 , wherein deploying the barrier into the deployed position is activated by a security system.

14. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said flexible anti-ballistic material comprises a laminate including more than two layers of flexible anti-ballistic material.

15. The system according to claim 14 , wherein the layers of said anti-ballistic laminate are secured together by stitching.

16. The system according to claim 1 , wherein said barrier is secured to the floor using a latching mechanism.

17. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising a securing structure mounted at or near the window frame configured to engage a portion of a bottom end or side of the deployable barrier when said deployable barrier is in a deployed position and to not secure the portion of the bottom end or side of the deployable barrier when the deployable barrier is in the retracted position.

18. A window blind system of protecting an interior space from ballistic objects using a deployable barrier, comprising:

a mounting structure configured for storing the deployable barrier in a retracted position in or at an interior window frame of a window;

the deployable barrier comprising an anti-ballistic laminate including at least two layers of a flexible contiguous sheet of woven anti-ballistic material with all said layers stacked on top of each other and being secured together into a flexible laminated sheet;

a threat detection subsystem configured to detect a potential threat from a ballistic object; and

a deployment mechanism configured to automatically drop the barrier into a deployed position with a substantial portion of said barrier, when deployed, being configured to flex and move in response to impact from the ballistic object to absorb energy from the ballistic object to further protect said space from the ballistic object, wherein

said ballistic object includes shrapnel and/or a bullet deployed by a weapon.

19. The system according to claim 18 , further comprising a securing structure mounted at or near the window frame configured to engage a portion of a bottom end or side of the deployable barrier when said deployable barrier is in a deployed position and to not secure the portion of the bottom end or side of the deployable barrier when the deployable barrier is in the retracted position.

20. A window blind system of protecting an interior space from ballistic objects using a deployable barrier, comprising:

a mounting structure configured for storing the deployable barrier in a retracted position in or at an interior window frame of a window;

the deployable barrier comprising an anti-ballistic laminate including more than two layers of a contiguous sheet of woven material comprising flexible anti-ballistic fibers with all of said layers being stacked on top of each other and secured together into a flexible laminated sheet;

a securing structure mounted at or near the window frame configured to engage a portion of a bottom end or side of the deployable barrier when said deployable barrier is in a deployed position and to not secure the portion of the bottom end or side of the deployable barrier when the deployable barrier is in the retracted position; and

a deployment mechanism configured to automatically deploy drop the barrier into the deployed position with a substantial portion of said barrier, when deployed, being configured to flex and move in response to impact from the ballistic object to absorb energy from the ballistic object to further protect said space from the ballistic object, wherein

said ballistic object includes shrapnel and/or a bullet deployed by a weapon.
