Abstract

A robot arm comprising a plurality of limbs articulated relative to each other, the robot arm extending from a base to a distal limb carrying a tool or an attachment point for a tool, the distal limb being attached by a revolute joint to a second limb, and the robot arm comprising a motor having a body and a drive shaft configured to drive rotation of the distal limb relative to the second limb about the revolute joint, wherein the body of the motor is fast with the distal limb.

Claims (30)

1. A robot arm comprising:

a plurality of limbs articulated relative to each other, the robot arm extending from a robot arm base to a distal limb, the distal limb being attached by a revolute joint to a second limb, and the robot arm comprising a motor having a body and a drive shaft configured to drive rotation of the distal limb relative to the second limb about a rotation axis of the revolute joint;

wherein the body of the motor is within the distal limb;

wherein the distal limb includes:

a drive interface configured to attach to a tool and having a drive interface element, the drive interface extending in a direction that is parallel to the rotation axis of the revolute joint, and the rotation axis of the revolute joint passing through the drive interface;

a tool motor having a tool motor body within the distal limb; and

a tool motor drive shaft for driving the drive interface element of the drive interface; and

wherein the motor and the tool motor intersect a common plane perpendicular to the rotation axis of the revolute joint.

2. The robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the tool motor drive shaft is configured to drive the drive interface element in a direction parallel to the rotation axis of the revolute joint.

3. The robot arm as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the tool motor drive shaft is configured to drive the drive interface element linearly parallel to the rotation axis of the revolute joint.

4. The robot arm as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the tool motor drive shaft is configured to drive a lead screw which causes the drive interface element to be displaced linearly parallel to a longitudinal direction of the lead screw.

5. The robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the drive interface element is offset from the rotation axis of the revolute joint.

6. The robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the tool motor body is on an opposing side of the rotation axis of the revolute joint to the body of the motor.

7. The robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the distal limb comprises a housing and the body of the motor and the tool motor body are within the housing.

8. The robot arm as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the body of the motor and the tool motor body are fixed to the housing.

9. The robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the second limb comprises an internally toothed gear disposed about the rotation axis of the revolute joint and the drive shaft of the motor carries a gear that engages the internally toothed gear so as to drive rotation of the distal limb relative to the second limb about the revolute joint.

10. The robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of further motors configured to drive relative motion of successive limbs of the robot arm about respective joints and each further motor is located proximally of its respective joint.

11. The robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the drive interface is configured to releasably attach to the tool.

12. The robot arm as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a module comprising:

a base attachable to the second limb;

at least one bearing for supporting the distal limb and permitting relative rotation of the base of the module and the distal limb about the rotation axis of the revolute joint;

a gear engageable by the drive shaft of the motor of the distal limb for driving rotation of the distal limb relative to the second limb about the revolute joint; and

a torque sensor device that attaches the base of the module to the gear.

13. The robot arm as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the module comprises two bearings for supporting the distal limb and permitting relative rotation of the base of the module and the distal limb about the rotation axis of the revolute joint, the two bearings being separated along the rotation axis of the revolute joint by the motor of the distal limb.

14. The robot arm as claimed in claim 13 , wherein the distal limb comprises a housing and the body of the motor and the tool motor body are within the housing, and the housing is free to rotate relative to the base by means of the bearings.

15. The robot arm as claimed in claim 13 , wherein the two bearings are spaced apart by a full length of the motor and the tool motor.

16. The robot arm as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the module further comprises a side-wall which is fast with the base and the distal limb is mounted to the side-wall by the at least one bearing.

17. The robot arm as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the base comprises a central boss and the torque sensor is attached to the central boss.

18. The robot arm as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the distal limb further comprises a circuit board configured to receive signals which, when decoded by the circuit board cause the circuit board to issue control signals to control the operation of the motor and the tool motor.

19. The robot arm as claimed in claim 18 , wherein a channel runs through the interior of the module for accommodating a communication cable that connects the circuit board to a circuit board in the second limb.
