Abstract

Processes for producing high biogenic concentration Fischer-Tropsch liquids derived from the organic fraction of municipal solid wastes (MSW) feedstock that contains a relatively high concentration of biogenic carbon (derived from plants) and a relatively low concentration of non-biogenic carbon (derived from fossil sources) wherein the biogenic content of the Fischer-Tropsch liquids is the same as the biogenic content of the feedstock.

Claims (23)

1 . A system for producing syngas derived from municipal solid wastes (MSW) processed feedstock that contain biogenic carbon, said system comprising:

a bio-refinery for converting the MSW processed feedstock into syngas, the bio-refinery comprising:

an input stream containing MSW processed feedstock that has been processed to remove non-biogenic derived carbon materials and non-carbonaceous materials from the MSW to produce MSW processed feedstock that contains a greater concentration of biogenic carbon than non-biogenic carbon;

a gasification island (GI) configured to receive the input stream and gasify, sub-stoichiometrically oxidize and hydrocarbon reform the MSW processed feedstock to produce syngas containing CO, H 2 , H 2 O and CO 2 from the MSW processed feedstock;

a syngas conditioning unit configured to receive syngas from the gasification island and remove contaminants, remove/recover CO 2 and provide CO 2 for recycle that contains a greater concentration of biogenic carbon than non-biogenic carbon;

a CO 2 recycle stream that recycles the CO 2 from the syngas conditioning unit to the gasification island for biogenic carbon conservation and adjusts H 2 :CO 2 ratio in the syngas to a predetermined value; and

a power generator that receives syngas containing a greater concentration of biogenic carbon than non-biogenic carbon and converts some or all of the syngas into power;

wherein the gasification island further comprises: a steam reformer, the steam reformer containing an indirect heating apparatus inside the steam reformer, and configured to dry, volatilize and gasify the processed feedstock to produce (i) a first syngas stream containing CO, H 2 , H 2 O and CO 2 , and unreacted hydrocarbons, and (ii) a stream of solids comprising ash and unreacted char;

a sub-stoichiometric carbon oxidation unit configured to receive the stream of solids and gasify the unreacted char from the stream of solids to produce a second syngas stream, the second syngas stream joining the first syngas stream to form a third syngas stream and maximize the quantity of biogenic carbon in the MSW processed feedstock; and

a hydrocarbon reforming unit configured to receive the third syngas stream and convert any remaining char, hydrocarbons and tars into syngas by thermal dissociation.

2 . A system according to claim 1 further comprising an Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) reactor that receives syngas from the syngas conditioning unit and produces Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) liquids.

3 . A system according to claim 2 wherein the F-T reactor provides F-T liquids, including a heavy F-T liquid fraction (HFTL) and a medium F-T liquid fraction (MFTL), and F-T tailgas.

4 . A system according to claim 3 wherein the F-T tailgas is recycled to the F-T reactor.

5 . A system according to claim 3 further including a hydrocracker for receiving the F-T liquids.

6 . A system according to claim 5 further including a fractionator for receiving heavy crackate and light crackate from the hydrocracker.

7 . A system according to claim 6 wherein the fractionator provides hydrocarbon products.

8 . A system according to claim 2 , further comprising:

an upgrading system comprising a hydrotreating/hydrocracking reactor and fractionation system configured to upgrade Fischer-Tropsch liquids into a transportation fuel.

9 . A system according to claim 8 wherein the Fischer-Tropsch liquids are upgraded into any one or more of: synthetic paraffinic kerosene (SPK), diesel fuel or naphtha.

10 . A system according to claim 1 wherein the MSW contains liquids.

11 . A system according to claim 1 wherein the MSW contains organic waste materials.

12 . A system according to claim 1 wherein the MSW contains biomass materials.

13 . A system according to claim 12 wherein the biomass materials contain vegetative matter.
