Controlled release concentrate and suspensions including the same
Provided is a food and beverage additive having enhanced water solubility, the additive including: an aqueous solution; a first plurality of polymers; a first particle including: a first plurality of lipophilic carriers; a first active ingredient; a first plurality of emulsifying agents; and a second plurality of polymers; wherein the first particle exhibits higher hydrophilicity compared to the first active ingredient; and wherein a plurality of the first particles are uniformly dispersed in the aqueous solution.
1 . A food or beverage additive having enhanced water solubility, the additive comprising:
an aqueous solution;
a first polymer, wherein the first polymer is selected from the group consisting of gum arabic, alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, starch, xanthan, locust bean gum, pectin, guar gum, and gum acacia;
a first particle comprising:
a first lipophilic carrier;
a first active ingredient;
a first emulsifying agent, wherein the first emulsifying agent is selected from the group consisting of an extract of Quillaja , extract of licorice, polysorbate 20, polysorbate 40, polysorbate 45, polysorbate 60, polysorbate 65, polysorbate 80, polysorbate 81, polysorbate 85, polyglyceryl, gum acacia, polyglycerol polyricinoleate, sorbitan85, sorbitan65, sorbitan83, sorbitan80, sorbitan60, sorbitan40, xanthan gum, sorbitol, mannitol, glycerol, sodium alginate, lecithin, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidic acid, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylinositol, sphingomyelin, cardiolipin, hydrogenated soybean phosphatidylcholine, tocopherol polyethylene glycol succinate, fatty acid mono- and di-glycerides, acetic acid esters of mono- and di-glycerides, lactic acid esters of mono- and di-glycerides, citric acid esters of mono- and di-glycerides, diacetyl tartaric acid ester of mono- and di-glycerides, triglycerol monooleate, hexaglycerol octasterate, polyglycerol esters of oleic acid, decaglycerol mono- and di-oleate, glyceryl caprylate, glyceryl caprate, glyceryl caprate/caprylate, glyceryl monooleate, glyceryl monostearate, poloxamers, milk proteins, casein, pea proteins, whey proteins, and a combination thereof; and
a second polymer, wherein the second polymer is selected from the group consisting of methyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, shellac, ethyl methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, cellulose, 12-hydroxystearic acid, beeswax, candelilla wax, carnauba wax, rice bran wax, and a combination thereof;
wherein;
the first particle exhibits higher hydrophilicity compared to the first active ingredient;
a plurality of the first particles are dispersed in the aqueous solution;
the first particle has a Z-average diameter of smaller than 1 micron, when tested by Dynamic Light Scattering;
the aqueous solution is at least 55% by weight of the additive;
the first active ingredient is at least 5% by weight of the additive;
the first lipophilic carrier is at least 10% by weight of the additive; and
the first active ingredient is less than 50% by weight of the first lipophilic carrier.
2 . The additive of claim 1 , the additive further comprising:
a second emulsifying agents selected from the group consisting of an extract of Quillaja , polysorbate 20, polysorbate 40, polysorbate 45, polysorbate 60, polysorbate 65, polysorbate 80, polysorbate 81 and polysorbate 85, polyglyceryl, gum acacia, xanthan gum, sorbitol, mannitol, glycerol, sodium alginate, and a combination thereof.
3 . The additive of claim 1 , wherein:
the first emulsifying agent has a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of higher than 8; and
the first emulsifying agent is more than 25% by weight of the first lipophilic carrier.
4 . The additive of claim 1 , the additive further comprising:
at least one preservative agent selected from the group consisting of sodium benzoate, sodium metabisulfite, potassium sorbate, sorbic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, sulfites, nitrites, sodium sorbate, calcium sorbate, benzoic acid, potassium benzonate, and a combination thereof.
5 . The additive of claim 1 , the additive further comprising:
at least one flavoring agent.
6 . The additive of claim 1 , wherein:
the first particle has a Z-average diameter of smaller than 200 nm, when tested by Dynamic Light Scattering.
7 . The additive of claim 1 , wherein:
the first particle has a Z-average diameter of smaller than 500 nm; and
the additive can be stored at room temperature for at least 12 months, with less than 20% change in the Z-average diameter of the first particle.
8 . The additive of claim 1 , wherein:
the second polymer has a first glass transition temperature, wherein the first glass transition temperature is higher than 100° C.;
the first particle has a Z-average diameter of smaller than 500 nm; and
the additive can be stored at temperatures below 85° C. for at least 30 minutes, with less than 20% change in the Z-average diameter of the first particle.
9 . The additive of claim 1 , wherein:
the plurality of the first particles has a polydispersity of less than or equal to 0.25.
10 . The additive of claim 1 , wherein:
the aqueous solution is selected from the group consisting of: water, saline, propylene glycol, or combinations thereof.
11 . The additive of claim 1 , wherein:
the first active ingredient has a concentration of at least 40 milligram per milliliter of the additive.
12 . The additive of claim 1 , wherein:
the first active ingredient comprises a source of cannabinoids, wherein the source of cannabinoids is selected from the group consisting of cannabigerol, cannabigerolic acid, cannabigerolic acid monomethylether, cannabigerol monomethyl ether, cannabichromene, cannabichromanon, cannabichromenic acid, cannabichromevarin, cannabichromevarinic acid, cannabidiol, tetrahydrocannabinol, iso-tetrahydrocannabinol-type, cannabinol, cannabinolic acid, cannabinol methylether, cannabicyclol-type, cannabicyclolic acid, cannabicyclovarin, cannabicitran, cannabitriol, cannabitriolvarin, cannabivarin, cannabifuran, cannabiripsol, and a combination thereof.
13 . The additive of claim 1 , wherein:
at least 30% by weight of the first active ingredient is not released within 60 minutes after consumption.
14 . The additive of claim 1 , the first particle further comprising:
at least one source of bioavailibity enhancer.
15 . The additive of claim 1 , wherein:
the second polymer comprises ethyl cellulose.
16 . The additive of claim 1 , the first particle further comprising:
at least one wax having a melting points exceeding 45° C.
17 . The additive of claim 1 , the first particle further comprising:
a second active ingredient, wherein the second active ingredient is selected from the group consisting of hemp, cannabis, Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea angustifolia, Echinacea pallida, Acmella oleracea, Helichrysum umbraculigerum, Radula marginata , kava, black truffle, Syzygium aromaticum, Rosmarinus officinalis, basil, oregano, lavender, true cinnamon, malabathrum, Cananga odorata , riboflavin, theanine, Ginkgo biloba , bacopa, Rhodiola rosea extract, and a combination thereof.
18 . The additive of claim 1 , wherein:
the first lipophilic carrier is selected from the group consisting of triglycerides, partial glycerides, polyoxyethylated fatty alcohols, polyethylene glycol, vegetable oil, and a combination thereof.
19 . A food or beverage additive having enhanced water solubility, the additive comprising:
an aqueous solution;
a first polymer, wherein the first polymer is selected from the group consisting of gum arabic, alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, starch, xanthan, locust bean gum, pectin, guar gum, gum acacia, and a combination thereof;
a first particle comprising:
a first lipophilic carrier, wherein the first lipophilic carrier is selected from the group consisting of triglycerides, partial glycerides, polyoxyethylated fatty alcohols, polyethylene glycol, vegetable oil, and a combination thereof;
a first active ingredient, wherein the first active ingredient comprises a source of cannabinoids, wherein the source of cannabinoids is selected from the group consisting of cannabigerol, cannabigerolic acid, cannabigerolic acid monomethylether, cannabigerol monomethyl ether, cannabichromene, cannabichromanon, cannabichromenic acid, cannabichromevarin, cannabichromevarinic acid, cannabidiol, tetrahydrocannabinol, iso-tetrahydrocannabinol-type, cannabinol, cannabinolic acid, cannabinol methylether, cannabicyclol-type, cannabicyclolic acid, cannabicyclovarin, cannabicitran, cannabitriol, cannabitriolvarin, cannabivarin, cannabifuran, cannabiripsol, and a combination thereof;
a first emulsifying agent, wherein the first emulsifying agent is selected from the group consisting of an extract of Quillaja , extract of licorice, polysorbate 20, polysorbate 40, polysorbate 45, polysorbate 60, polysorbate 65, polysorbate 80, polysorbate 81 polysorbate 85, polyglyceryl, gum acacia, Polyglycerol polyricinoleate, sorbitan 85, sorbitan 65, sorbitan 83, sorbitan 80, sorbitan 60, sorbitan 40, xanthan gum, sorbitol, mannitol, glycerol, sodium alginate, lecithin, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidic acid, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylinositol, sphingomyelin, cardiolipin, hydrogenated soybean phosphatidylcholine, hydrogenated soybean phosphatidylcholine, tocopherol polyethylene glycol succinate, fatty acid mono- and di-glycerides, acetic acid esters of mono- and di-glycerides, lactic acid esters of mono- and di-glycerides, citric acid esters of mono- and di-glycerides, diacetyl tartaric acid ester of mono- and di-glycerides, triglycerol monooleate, hexaglycerol octasterate, polyglycerol esters of oleic acid, decaglycerol mono- and di-oleate, glyceryl caprylate, glyceryl caprate, glyceryl caprate/caprylate, glyceryl monooleate, glycerly monostearate, poloxamers, milk proteins, casein, pea proteins, whey proteins, and a combination thereof; and
a second polymer, wherein the second polymer is selected from the group consisting of methyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, shellac, ethyl methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, cellulose, 12-hydroxystearic acid, beeswax, candelilla wax, carnauba wax, rice bran wax, and a combination thereof;
wherein;
the first particle exhibits higher hydrophilicity compared to the first active ingredient;
a plurality of the first particles are uniformly dispersed in the aqueous solution;
the first particle has a Z-average diameter of smaller than 1 micron, when tested by Dynamic Light Scattering;
the aqueous solution is at least 55% by weight of the additive;
the first active ingredient is at least 5% by weight of the additive;
the first lipophilic carrier is at least 10% by weight of the additive; and
the first active ingredient is less than 50% by weight of the first lipophilic carrier.
20 . A food or beverage additive having enhanced water solubility, the additive comprising:
an aqueous solution;
a first polymer, wherein the first polymer comprises xanthan gum
a preservative agent, wherein the first preservative agent is sodium benzoate;
a plurality of particles each comprising:
a first lipophilic carrier, wherein the first lipophilic carrier is a partial glyceride;
a first active ingredient, wherein the first active ingredient comprises a source of cannabinoids, wherein the source of cannabinoids is cannabidiol;
a first emulsifying agent, wherein the first emulsifying agent comprises polysorbate 80; and
a second polymer, wherein the second polymer comprises ethyl methyl cellulose;
wherein the plurality of particles exhibit higher hydrophilicity compared to the first active ingredient;
wherein the plurality of particles are dispersed in the aqueous solution
the plurality of particles have a Z-average diameter of smaller than 200 nm, when tested by Dynamic Light Scattering; and
wherein the plurality particles have a polydispersity of less than or equal to 0.25.
