Abstract

Sustained-released beads providing active ingredients over an extended period of time to an individual orally ingesting the sustained release beads. The sustained-release beads can be part of a suspension wherein the sustained-release beads are suspended and evenly dispersed in the suspension. Binding agents are used to form the structural framework of the sustained released beads and retain the active ingredients without chemical or electrical bonding. The components of the dispersion medium are GRAS designated, making the suspension suitable for use as a food product.

Claims (63)

1. A suspension comprising:

A dispersion medium consisting of:

an aqueous solution; and

one or more thickening agents,

wherein the total amount of thickening agent in the dispersion medium ranges from 0.05 wt % to 2.0 wt % of the dispersion medium and the aqueous solution ranges from 75 wt % to 99.5 wt % of the dispersion medium; and

a dispersed phase comprising:

one or more uncoated sustained-release beads comprising:

one or more binding agents; and

one or more active ingredients;

wherein the suspension is a drinkable beverage and includes only ingredients that are GRAS-compliant or present in GRAS-compliant quantities.

2. The suspension as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the one or more thickening agents are selected from the group consisting of agar agar, xanthan gum, guar gum, gelatin, acacia gum, pectin, ester gum, Arabic gum, and gullan gum.

3. The suspension as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the one or more binding agents are selected from the group consisting of methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, dicalcium phosphate, cellulose, hypromellose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, and hydroxyethyl cellulose.

4. The suspension as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the one or more active ingredients are selected from caffeine, potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, vitamins, and minerals.

5. The suspension as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a total amount of binding agent in each uncoated sustained-release bead of the dispersed phase ranges from 40 wt % to 95 wt % of the uncoated sustained-release bead.

6. The suspension as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the dispersed phase comprises:

one or more first uncoated sustained-release beads comprising:

one or more binding agents; and

one or more active ingredients: and

one or more second uncoated sustained-release beads comprising:

one or more binding agents; and

one or more active ingredients;

wherein at least one of the one or more active ingredients in the first uncoated sustained-release beads is different from at least one of the one or more active ingredients in the second uncoated sustained-release beads.

7. The suspension as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the dispersed phase comprises:

one or more first uncoated sustained-release beads comprising:

one or more binding agents; and

one or more active ingredients: and

one or more second uncoated sustained-release beads comprising:

one or more binding agents; and

one or more active ingredients; and

wherein the one or more first uncoated sustained-release beads release the one or more active ingredients contained therein at a rate different from the rate at which the one or more second uncoated sustained release beads release the one or more active ingredients contained therein.

8. The suspension as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the dispersed phase comprises:

one or more first uncoated sustained-release beads comprising:

one or more binding agents; and

one or more active ingredients: and

one or more second uncoated sustained-release beads comprising:

one or more binding agents; and

one or more active ingredients;

wherein at least one of the one or more active ingredients in the first uncoated sustained-release beads is different from at least one of the one or more active ingredients in the second uncoated sustained-release beads; and

wherein the one or more first uncoated sustained-release beads release the one or more active ingredients contained therein at a rate different from the rate at which the one or more second uncoated sustained release beads release the one or more active ingredients contained therein.

9. The suspension as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the drinkable beverage is a non-pharmaceutical beverage.

10. A suspension comprising:

A dispersion medium consisting essentially of:

an aqueous solution; and

one or more thickening agents;

wherein the total amount of thickening agent in the dispersion medium ranges from 0.05 wt % to 2.0 wt % of the dispersion medium and the aqueous solution ranges from 75 wt % to 99.5 wt % of the dispersion medium; and

a dispersed phase comprising:

one or more uncoated sustained-release beads comprising:

one or more binding agents; and

one or more active ingredients;

wherein the suspension is a drinkable beverage and includes only ingredients that are GRAS-compliant or present in GRAS-compliant quantities.

11. A suspension comprising:

A dispersion medium consisting of:

an aqueous solution;

one or more thickening agents;

one or more sweeteners;

one or preservatives; and

one or more coloring agents;

wherein the total amount of thickening agent in the dispersion medium ranges from 0.05 wt % to 2.9 wt % of the dispersion medium and the aqueous solution ranges from 75 wt % to 99.5 wt % of the dispersion medium; and

a dispersed phase comprising:

one or more uncoated sustained-release beads comprising:

one or more binding agents; and

one or more active ingredients;

wherein the suspension is a drinkable beverage and includes only ingredients that are GRAS-compliant or present in GRAS-compliant quantities.
