Abstract

Location modeling may be generated for candidate locations based on validated location data. The location models for candidate locations may be based on validated location data associated with wireless access points that is validated using transaction data. Such validation may include comparing an identifier associated with candidate location data received from a client device to an identifier for a transaction account associated with a transaction from transaction data at a candidate location. Matching transaction data and candidate location data may generate validated location data to be used in generating location models for candidate locations.

Claims (51)

1. A system to validate accuracy of location data, comprising:

a memory storing instructions, when executed by one or more processors, causes the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving, from a first client device, first location data of the first client device indicative of a first candidate location of a plurality of candidate locations, the first location data comprising an identifier of the first client device and a plurality of received signal strength values associated with a plurality of wireless access points associated with the plurality of candidate locations;

determining based on the plurality of received signal strength values of the plurality of wireless access points associated with the plurality of candidate locations, that the one or more processor is unable to distinguish whether the first location data is associated with a location inside or outside of the first candidate location;

transmitting, responsive to the determination that the one or more processor is unable to distinguish whether the first location data is associated with a location inside or outside of the first candidate location, a validation request to a transaction data provider for a record of a past transaction associated with the identifier of the client device at the first candidate location;

receiving, from the transaction data provider responsive to the validation request, a validation response that indicates the transaction data provider has the record of the past transaction associated with the identifier of the client device at the first candidate location;

generating, responsive to receipt of the validation response, a first location model for the first candidate location with the first location data received from the first client device and the validation response;

identifying access of a social media application via a second client device;

receiving, from the second client device, second location data of the second client device indicative of the first candidate location of the plurality of candidate locations, the second location data comprising a second plurality of received signal strength values associated with the plurality of wireless access points associated with the plurality of candidate locations;

determining, based at least in part on the generated first location model for the first candidate location and the second location data, that the second client device location is located at the first candidate location associated with the generated first location model;

selecting, based on determining the second client device location is located at the first location associated with the first location model, a content item for presentation via the social media application accessed via the second client device; and

providing, to the second client device, the content item for display via the social media application accessed via the second client device.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are unable to distinguish whether the first location data is associated with the location inside or outside of the first candidate location based on a lapse in time from when the first client device last received data from a global positioning system, wherein the lapse in time is greater than a predetermined time threshold.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors the unable to distinguish whether the first location data is associated with the location inside or outside of the first candidate location based on a resolution of the first location data.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the social media application comprises a messenger application associated with the social media application.

5. The system of claim 1 , comprising the one or more processors to:

receive the second client device location data subsequent to the access of the social media application.

6. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

the one or more processors to execute a content selection service to select the content item based on the second client device location determined based on the first location model and the second location data.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein generating the first location model is based on one or more negative indicators that the first client device detects an available access point not associated with the candidate location.

8. The system of claim 1 , comprising:

updating the first location model by:

obtaining data comprising a social media post tagged with location information, wherein the social media post is associated with the first client device being located at the first candidate location; and

validating the first location model based on the first location data and the social media post tagged with the location information, wherein the social media post tagged with the location information is an indirect confirmation of ground-truth location information for the first candidate location.

9. A method of validating accuracy of location data, comprising:

receiving, by one or more processors from a first client device, first location data of the first client device indicative of a first candidate location of a plurality of candidate locations, the first location data comprising an identifier of the first client device and a plurality of received signal strength values associated with a plurality of wireless access points associated with the plurality of candidate locations;

determining, by the one or more processors, based on the plurality of received signal strength values of the plurality of wireless access points associated with the plurality of candidate locations, that the one or more processors are unable to distinguish whether the first location data is associated with a location inside or outside of the first candidate location;

transmitting, by the one or more processors, responsive to the determination that the one or more processors is unable to distinguish whether the first location data is associated with a location inside or outside of the first candidate location, a validation request to a transaction data provider for a record of a past transaction associated with the identifier of the client device at the first candidate location;

receiving, by the one or more processors, from the transaction data provider responsive to the validation request, a validation response that indicates the transaction data provider has the record of the past transaction associated with the identifier of the client device at the first candidate location;

generating, by the one or more processors, responsive to receipt of the validation response, a first location model for the first candidate location with the first location data received from the first client device and the validation response;

identifying, by the one or more processors, access of a social media application via a second client device;

receiving, from the second client device, second location data of the second client device indicative of the first candidate location of the plurality of candidate locations, the second location data comprising a second plurality of received signal strength values associated with the plurality of wireless access points associated with the plurality of candidate locations;

determining, by the one or more processors, based at least in part on the generated first location model for the candidate location and the second location data, that the second client device location is located at the candidate location associated with the generated first location model;

selecting, by the one or more processors, based on determining the second client device location is located at the first location associated with the first location model, a content item for presentation via the social media application accessed via the second client device; and

providing, to the second client device, the content item for display via the social media application accessed via the second client device.

The method of claim 9 , wherein determining, by the one or more processors, that the one or more processors are unable to distinguish whether the first location data is associated with the location inside or outside of the first candidate location is based on a lapse in time from when the first client device last received data from a global positioning system, wherein the lapse in time is greater than a predetermined time threshold.

The method of claim 9 , wherein determining, by the one or more processors, that the one or more processors are unable to distinguish whether the first location data is associated with a location inside or outside of the first candidate location is-based on a resolution of the first location data.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the social media application comprises-a messenger application associated with the social media application.

13. The method of claim 9 , comprising:

receiving, by the one or more processors, the second client device location data subsequent to the access of the social media application.

14. The method of claim 9 , comprising:

executing, by the one or more processors, a content selection service to select the content item based on the second client device location determined based on the first location model and the second location data.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein generating, by the one or more processors, the location model is based on one or more negative indicators that the first client device detects an available access point not associated with the candidate location.

16. The method of claim 9 , comprising:

updating, by the one or more processors, the first location model by:

obtaining data comprising a social media post tagged with location information, wherein the social media post is associated with the first client device being located at the first candidate location; and

validating the first location model based on the first location data and the social media post tagged with the location information, wherein the social media post tagged with the location information is an indirect confirmation of ground-truth location information for the first candidate location.

17. The system to validate accuracy of location data of claim 1 , wherein generating the first location model for the first candidate location model comprises the first location model executing a machine learning algorithm.

18. The system to validate accuracy of location data of claim 17 , wherein the machine learning algorithm comprises a regression learning algorithm.

19. The method of claim 9 , wherein generating the first location model for the first candidate location model comprises the first location model executing a machine learning algorithm.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the machine learning algorithm comprises a regression learning algorithm.
