Abstract

A signaling circuit having a selectable-tap equalizer. The signaling circuit includes a buffer, a select circuit and an equalizing circuit. The buffer is used to store a plurality of data values that correspond to data signals transmitted on a signaling path during a first time interval. The select circuit is coupled to the buffer to select a subset of data values from the plurality of data values according to a select value. The equalizing circuit is coupled to receive the subset of data values from the select circuit and is adapted to adjust, according to the subset of data values, a signal level that corresponds to a data signal transmitted on the signaling path during a second time interval.

Claims (42)

1. An integrated circuit to couple to a signal path, the integrated circuit comprising:

a receiver to receive a first sequence of symbols arriving via the signal path;

a transmitter to transmit a second sequence of symbols via the signal path; and circuitry to:

store a programmable tap latency value;

provide a value of one of respective symbols selected according to the programmable value; and

equalize reception of symbols of the first sequence by the receiver according to values of the second sequence of symbols and the provided value.

2. The integrated circuit of claim 1 , wherein the symbols of the first sequence are respective bits and wherein the symbols of the second sequence are respective bits.

3. The integrated circuit of claim 1 , wherein:

the integrated circuit further comprises circuitry to buffer values of the symbols of the second sequence prior to transmission; and

the circuitry is to equalize the first sequence of symbols according to ones of the values of the symbols of the second sequence which have not yet been transmitted.

4. The integrated circuit of claim 1 , wherein:

the integrated circuit comprises a shift register to shift symbols;

the circuitry comprises at least one tap coupled to the shift register to receive therefrom a value

of one of the symbols shifted by the shift register; and

the circuitry is to equalize the reception of the symbols of the first sequence according to the

value of the one of the symbols shifted by the shift register.

5. The integrated circuit of claim 1 , wherein circuitry is to receive values of previously-received symbols from the first sequence and is to equalize reception of symbols of the first sequence of symbols according to the values of the previously-received symbols.

6. The integrated circuit of claim 5 , wherein the circuitry is to equalize a current symbol of the first sequence according to a predetermined latency, wherein the predetermined latency can correspond to each of symbols of the first sequence and symbols of the second sequence.

7. The integrated circuit of claim 1 , wherein the receiver is to receive symbols of the first sequence concurrent with transmission by the transmitter of symbols of the second sequence.

8. The integrated circuit of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter is to transmit the second sequence of symbols to a remote receiver and wherein the receiver is to receive the first sequence of symbols from a remote transmitter.

9. The integrated circuit of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is to equalize the reception by the receiver according to values of symbols of the first sequence received by the receiver during a first latency relative to a current symbol and according to values of symbols of the second sequence transmitted by the transmitter during a second latency relative to the current symbol, the second latency being greater than the first latency.

10. A method of operating an integrated circuit that couples to a signal path, the integrated circuit having a transmitter, a receiver and circuitry to equalize, the method comprising:

receiving a first sequence of symbols arriving via the signal path, with the receiver;

transmitting a second sequence of symbols via the signal path, with the transmitter;

storing a programmable tap latency value;

providing a value of one of respective symbols selected according to the programmable value; and

equalizing reception of symbols of the first sequence by the receiver according to values of the second sequence of symbols and the provided value, with the equalization circuitry.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the symbols of the first sequence are respective bits and wherein the symbols of the second sequence are respective bits.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the method further comprises buffering values of the symbols of the second sequence prior to transmission; and

the method further comprises equalizing reception of the first sequence of symbols according to ones of the values of the symbols of the second sequence which have not yet been transmitted.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the method further comprises using a shift register to shift symbols;

the equalization circuitry comprises at least one tap coupled to the shift register to receive

therefrom a value of one of the symbols shifted by the shift register; and

the method further comprises equalizing reception of symbols of the first sequence using the

value of the one of the symbols shifted by the shift register.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises receiving values of previously-received symbols from the first sequence and equalizing reception of symbols of the first sequence according to the values of the previously-received symbols.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the method further comprises equalizing a current symbol of the first sequence according to a predetermined latency, wherein the predetermined latency can correspond to each of symbols of the first sequence and symbols of the second sequence.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises receiving symbols of the first sequence concurrently with transmitting symbols of the second sequence.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein transmitting comprises transmitting the second sequence of symbols to a remote receiver and wherein receiving comprises receiving the first sequence of symbols from a remote transmitter.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises equaling the reception by the receiver according to values of symbols of the first sequence which were received by the receiver during a first latency relative to a current symbol and according to values of symbols of the second sequence which were transmitted by the transmitter during a second latency relative to the current symbol, the second latency being greater than the first latency.
