Abstract

A respiratory mask assembly for delivering breathable gas to a patient includes a frame having a front surface and a rear surface, opposite the front surface, and adapted in use to face the patient. The frame defines an inner wall and an outer wall extending from the rear surface, the inner and outer walls being spaced to define a channel therebetween. A cushion is removably attachable to the frame such that the cushion and frame are repeatably engagable with and disengagable from one another. The cushion includes a side wall to be inserted into the channel of the frame, the side wall having a first interlocking surface that engages a second interlocking surface provided in the channel when the cushion and frame are engaged with one another. The first and second interlocking surfaces interlock with one another to removably attach the cushion to the frame.

Claims (98)

1. A patient interface assembly for therapy of a patient having a breathing disorder, comprising:

a frame with a central aperture by which a flow of pressurized breathable gas is introduced in use; and

a cushion supported by the frame, the cushion being made of a material that is relatively softer than the frame;

a hose to deliver the flow of pressurized breathable gas to the central aperture of the frame;

an intermediate piece between the hose and the frame, the intermediate piece being releasably connected to the central aperture via a snap-action connection; and

a headgear assembly including a pair of flexible front strap portions constructed of a front fabric material and a pair of flexible rear strap portions constructed of a rear fabric material,

wherein each of the rear strap portions includes a rear strap end, and

wherein the front fabric material of the front strap portions includes stiffening support structure having a pair connector elements each having a slot to receive a respective one of the rear strap ends in a length adjustable manner, the stiffening support structure being formed of a relatively rigid material compared to the front fabric material, the stiffening support structure having a degree of flexibility in one direction such that variations in patient physiology can be accommodated in use, the stiffening support structure being stiffer in another direction generally orthogonal to the one direction to resist vertical rotation of the patient interface assembly due to weight or hose drag,

wherein the stiffening support structure projects rearwardly relative to each lateral side of the frame and has a curved shape configured to rest against the patient's cheeks and below the patient's eye in use, wherein the front strap portions are at least partly coextensive with the stiffening support structure to form a layered structure, with the front strap portions being positioned between the stiffening support structure and the patient's skin when worn,

wherein the patient interface assembly is not provided with a chin strap, and

wherein the patient interface assembly is not provided with a forehead support.

2. The patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the intermediate piece comprises an elbow.

3. The patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein said stiffening support structure has a thickness of 0.3-2.0 mm.

4. The patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein said stiffening support structure extends along the entire length of the front strap portions, with the connector elements extending beyond the front strap portions.

5. The patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a connecting member formed in one piece with the stiffening support structure to allow detachment of the headgear assembly while the frame, cushion and intermediate piece and hose remain attached to one another.

6. The patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the intermediate piece further comprises a gas washout vent with a plurality of holes to allow washout of carbon dioxide.

7. The patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the headgear assembly comprises a two point headgear assembly.

8. The patient interface assembly according to claim 1 , wherein:

said stiffening support structure has a thickness of 0.3-2.0 mm,

said stiffening support structure extends along the entire length of the front strap portions, with the connector elements extending beyond the front strap portions,

the stiffening support structure includes a connecting member formed in one piece with the stiffening support structure to allow detachment of the headgear assembly while the frame, cushion and intermediate piece and hose remain attached to one another, and

the intermediate piece further comprises a gas washout vent with a plurality of holes to allow washout of carbon dioxide.

9. An apparatus to deliver pressurized treatment gas to a patient, comprising:

a blower;

the patient interface assembly of claim 1 ; and

an air delivery conduit to connect the blower to the patient interface assembly.

10. A patient interface assembly for CPAP therapy of a patient, comprising:

a frame with a central aperture;

a cushion supported by the frame, the cushion being made of a material that is relatively softer than the frame;

an intermediate piece connected to the frame at the central aperture via a snap-fit connection, the intermediate piece being connected to a hose such that the intermediate piece is between the hose and the frame;

a strap assembly constructed of a strap material, and

a pair of stabilizing support members of a relatively rigid material compared to the strap material, each of the stabilizing support members having a degree of flexibility in one direction such that variations in patient physiology can be accommodated in use, wherein each said stabilizing support member is stiffer in another direction generally orthogonal to the one direction to resist vertical rotation of the patient interface assembly due to weight of the patient interface assembly and hose drag, wherein each of the pair of stabilizing support members extends rearwardly relative to the frame, each said stabilizing support member being adapted to extend along a curve and rest against the patient's cheeks and below the patient's eye, each said stabilizing support member being configured to curve upwardly between the patient's eye and ear, each said stabilizing support member having an integrally formed connector element in the form of a slot to threadingly receive a strap end of a strap portion of the strap assembly, wherein each said stabilizing support member includes an inside surface to which a soft and flexible material is provided for patient comfort,

wherein the patient interface assembly is not provided with a chin strap, and

wherein the patient interface assembly is not provided with a forehead support.

11. The patient interface assembly according to claim 10 , wherein:

the intermediate piece is a rotatable elbow and includes an end portion adapted to be received within the central aperture of the frame,

the elbow includes a gas washout vent with a plurality of holes to allow washout of carbon dioxide, and

the cushion is a nasal mask.

12. The patient interface assembly according to claim 11 , wherein:

each said stabilizing support member has a thickness of 0.3-2.0 mm,

the thickness of each said stabilizing support member across its profile varies, and

each of the stabilizing support members is connected via a connecting member.

13. The patient interface assembly according to claim 10 , wherein:

the intermediate piece is a rotatable elbow and includes an end portion adapted to be received within the central aperture of the frame, and

the cushion is an oro-nasal mask.

14. The patient interface assembly according to claim 13 , wherein:

each said stabilizing support member has a thickness of 0.3-2.0 mm,

the thickness of each said stabilizing support member across its profile varies, and

each of the stabilizing support members is connected via a connecting member.

15. The patient interface assembly according to claim 10 , wherein:

the intermediate piece includes an end portion adapted to be received within the central aperture of the frame,

the intermediate piece includes a gas washout vent with a plurality of holes to allow washout of carbon dioxide,

the intermediate piece is configured to be removed from the frame without accessing an interior portion of the frame,

engagement between the intermediate piece and the frame makes an audible sound, and

the cushion comprises a nasal mask.

16. An apparatus to deliver pressurized treatment gas to a patient, comprising:

a blower;

the patient interface assembly of claim 10 ; and

an air delivery conduit to connect the blower to the patient interface assembly.

17. A patient interface for treating a patient with a respiratory disorder, the patient interface comprising:

a frame having an opening to receive pressurized breathable gas;

a cushion to receive the pressurized breathable gas via the opening;

headgear to support the patient interface on the patient's head, the headgear including a rear portion including rear straps made of a strap material; and

a stiffened support structure to stabilize the patient interface on the patient's head, the stiffened support structure being elongated to extend rearwardly to engage the patient's cheeks and extend upwardly to a position between the patient's eye and ear, said stiffened support structure and being made of a material more rigid than the strap material, the stiffened support structure having a degree of flexibility in one direction such that variations in patient physiology can be accommodated in use, wherein said stiffened support structure is stiffer in another direction generally orthogonal to the one direction to resist vertical rotation of the patient interface due to weight of the patient interface and/or hose drag, the stiffened support structure having an inner surface provided with a fabric material to engage the cheeks of the patient for patient comfort,

wherein said stiffened support structure includes a pair of ends each having a slot to receive an end of each of the rear straps of the rear portion of the headgear,

wherein the patient interface does not include a chin strap and does not include a forehead support.

18. The patient interface of claim 17 , wherein the headgear consists of a two point headgear arrangement.

19. The patient interface of claim 17 , wherein the cushion includes a nasal cushion.

20. The patient interface of claim 17 , wherein the stiffened support structure is associated with a clip that is detachably connected.

21. The patient interface of claim 17 , wherein the cushion is permanently connected to the frame.

22. The patient interface of claim 17 , further comprising an intermediate piece having a first end coupled to the frame, and a hose having a first end connected to a second end of the intermediate piece and a second end having a swivel configured to connect to an air delivery tube.

23. The patient interface of claim 22 , further comprising a pair of diametrically opposed snap connections, and a pair of release portions that are compressible towards one another by the patient's fingers to disengage the snap connections and allow removal of the hose.

24. The patient interface of claim 22 , wherein the intermediate piece includes a pair of opposed snap connections to allow removal of the intermediate piece together with the hose.

25. The patient interface of claim 17 :

wherein the headgear is a two point headgear arrangement,

wherein the cushion is a nasal cushion,

wherein the stiffening support structure is associated with a clip that allows detachment,

wherein the cushion is permanently connected to the frame,

further comprising an intermediate piece having a first end coupled to the frame, and a hose having a first end connected to a second end of the intermediate piece and a second end having a swivel configured to connect to an air delivery tube,

wherein the intermediate piece includes opposed snap connections to allow removal of the intermediate member together with the hose, and

wherein the intermediate piece includes a plurality of vents for washout of patient-exhaled CO 2 .

26. The patient interface of claim 25 , wherein the two point headgear arrangement includes the stiffened support structure.

27. The patient interface of claim 17 :

wherein the cushion is a nasal cushion,

wherein the cushion is permanently connected to the frame,

further comprising a rotatable elbow having a first end coupled to the frame, and a hose having a first end connected to a second end of the elbow and a second end configured to connect to an air delivery tube,

further comprising a pair of diametrically opposed snap connections, and release portions that are compressible towards one another by the patient's fingers to disengage the snap connections and allow removal of the hose, and

wherein the elbow includes a plurality of vents for washout of patient-exhaled CO 2 .

28. The patient interface of claim 17 :

wherein the cushion is an oro-nasal cushion,

wherein the cushion is permanently connected to the frame,

further comprising a rotatable elbow having a first end coupled to the frame, and a hose having a first end connected to a second end the elbow and a second end configured to connect to an air delivery tube,

further comprising a pair of diametrically opposed snap connections, and release portions that are compressible towards one another by the patient's fingers to disengage the snap connections and allow removal of the hose, and

wherein the elbow includes a plurality of vents for washout of patient-exhaled CO 2 .

29. An apparatus to deliver pressurized treatment gas to a patient, comprising:

a blower;

the patient interface of claim 17 ; and

an air delivery conduit to connect the blower to the patient interface.
