Abstract

A braking system includes a frame, a linear actuator coupled to the frame, a rotating joint coupled to linear actuator and the frame, a force applicator coupled to the rotating joint, and a friction mat coupled to the force applicator. The first linear actuator is operable to cause the rotating joint to rotate relative to the frame and the force applicator is operable to vary a distance between the friction mat and the rotating joint.

Claims (36)

1. A braking system, comprising:

a frame;

a linear actuator coupled to the frame;

a rotating joint coupled to linear actuator and the frame;

a force applicator coupled to the rotating joint;

a friction mat coupled to the force applicator;

a reinforcing plate coupled to the friction mat;

a torsion spring positioned between the reinforcing plate and the force applicator and configured to bias the reinforcing plate towards an orientation substantially parallel to the frame; and

a computing system configured to control the linear actuator and the force applicator;

wherein the linear actuator is operable to cause the rotating joint to rotate relative to the frame; and

wherein the force applicator is operable to vary a distance between the friction mat and the rotating joint.

2. The braking system of claim 1 , wherein the force applicator is fluidly communicable with a hydraulic pump.

3. The braking system of claim 2 , comprising a hydraulic fluid reservoir coupled to the frame and fluidly communicable with the hydraulic pump.

4. The braking system of claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing plate comprises a plurality of holes extending therethrough.

5. The braking system of claim 1 , wherein the linear actuator comprises an electrical linear actuator.

6. The braking system of claim 1 , comprising a support plate coupled to the frame.

7. The braking system of claim 1 , wherein the computing system is configured to deploy the braking system by causing the linear actuator and the force applicator to extend.

8. The braking system of claim 1 , wherein the force applicator rotates relative to the frame when the rotating joint rotates relative to the frame.

9. A braking system, comprising:

a frame;

a linear actuator coupled to the frame;

a rotating joint coupled to linear actuator and the frame;

a force applicator coupled to the rotating joint;

a friction mat coupled to the force applicator;

a reinforcing plate coupled to the friction mat; and

a torsion spring positioned between the reinforcing plate and the force applicator and configured to bias the reinforcing plate towards an orientation substantially parallel to the frame;

wherein the reinforcing plate comprises a plurality of holes extending therethrough;

wherein the linear actuator is operable to cause the rotating joint to rotate relative to the frame; and

wherein the force applicator is operable to vary a distance between the friction mat and the rotating joint.

10. The braking system of claim 9 , wherein the force applicator is fluidly communicable with a hydraulic pump.

11. The braking system of claim 10 , comprising a hydraulic fluid reservoir coupled to the frame and fluidly communicable with the hydraulic pump.

12. The braking system of claim 9 , wherein the linear actuator comprises an electrical linear actuator.

13. The braking system of claim 9 , comprising a support plate coupled to the frame.

14. The braking system of claim 9 , further comprising a computing system configured to control the linear actuator and the force applicator.

15. The braking system of claim 14 , wherein the computing system is configured to deploy the braking system by causing the linear actuator and the force applicator to extend.

16. The braking system of claim 14 , wherein the force applicator rotates relative to the frame when the rotating joint rotates relative to the frame.
