Abstract

Embodiments provide a spacecraft airlock system. Embodiments provide a method and apparatus for attaching space exposed payloads to a space station. The spacecraft airlock system provides a defined volume of space payload to the international space station. The airlock further includes a means of attaching to a space station, a closed structure attached to said means, said means of attaching is capable of robotic manipulation, and a cooling system for cooling payload components within said closed structure.

at least one attachment mechanism configured to releasably attach one or more vacuum exposed payloads to the exterior surface;

at least one connection mechanism configured to releasably attach at least one heat sink to the exterior surface; and

at least one grappling fixture configured to engage a robotic grappling arm of the space station.

2. The spacecraft airlock of claim 1 , wherein the at least one grappling fixture includes one or more of a power/video grappling fixture, a flight releasable grappling fixture, or a grappling fixtures robotically controllable from a robotic control circuitry.

3. The spacecraft airlock of claim 1 , further comprising:

an interior volume that is configured to be pressurized and that is accessible by crew when the airlock is engaged with the space station or the transportation vehicle.

4. The spacecraft airlock of claim 3 , further comprising:

a hatch configured to provide access for the crew to the interior volume.

5. The spacecraft airlock of claim 1 , wherein the spacecraft airlock is configured such that the interior volume is accessible to the crew without use of a hatch or performance of an airlock function.

6. The spacecraft airlock of claim 1 , wherein the passive common berthing mechanism is configured to engage an active common berthing mechanism of the space station.

7. The spacecraft airlock of claim 1 , wherein the spacecraft airlock is configured such that the engagement of the end module is able to be performed without extra-vehicular activity.

8. A method of using the spacecraft airlock of claim 1 , the method comprising:

in an engaged position of the end module with the space station or the transport vehicle, and with the airlock in a pressurized state, transferring at least one item or person between the airlock and the space station or the transport vehicle;

transferring the spacecraft airlock between the pressurized state and a depressurized state;

in the depressurized state of the airlock, moving the spacecraft airlock, via the robotic grappling arm engaged with the at least one grappling fixture, between the engaged position and a disengaged position; and

in the disengaged position, transferring the at least one item or person between the spacecraft airlock and an external environment.

9. A spacecraft airlock, comprising:

an end module including a passive common berthing mechanism positioned around an open end of the end module and configured to selectively engage with a space station or a transportation vehicle such that the spacecraft airlock is configured to receive pressurized air from the space station or the transportation vehicle;

a cylindrical sidewall adjoining the passive common berthing mechanism of the end module; and

an endwall adjoining the cylindrical sidewall, opposite the passive common berthing mechanism of the open end of the end module, wherein the cylindrical sidewall and the endwall together form an exterior surface of the spacecraft airlock, the exterior surface including;

at least one attachment mechanism configured to releasably attach one or more vacuum exposed payloads to the exterior surface such that the one or more vacuum exposed payload are attachable and releasable without extra-vehicular activity;

at least one connection mechanism configured to releasably attach at least one heat sink to the exterior surface; and

at least one grappling fixture configured to engage a robotic grappling arm of the space station.

10. The spacecraft airlock of claim 9 , wherein the spacecraft airlock is configured such that the attachment and release of the one or more vacuum exposed payloads is able to consist of robotically controlled operations.

11. The spacecraft airlock of claim 9 , further comprising:

an interior volume that is configured to be pressurized and that is accessible by crew when the airlock is engaged with the space station or the transportation vehicle.

12. The spacecraft airlock of claim 11 , further comprising:

a hatch configured to provide access for the crew to the interior volume.

13. The spacecraft airlock of claim 11 , wherein the spacecraft airlock is configured such that the interior volume is accessible to the crew without use of a hatch or performance of an airlock function.

14. The spacecraft airlock of claim 9 , wherein the spacecraft airlock is configured such that the engagement of the end module is able to be performed without extra-vehicular activity.

15. A method of using the spacecraft airlock of claim 9 , the method comprising:

in an engaged position of the end module with the space station or the transport vehicle, with the airlock in a pressurized state, transferring at least one item or person between the airlock and the space station or the transport vehicle;

transferring the spacecraft airlock between the pressurized state and a depressurized state;

in the depressurized state of the airlock, moving the spacecraft airlock, via the robotic grappling arm engaged with the at least one grappling fixture, between the engaged position and a disengaged position; and

in the disengaged position, transferring the at least one item or person between the spacecraft airlock and an external environment.

16. A spacecraft airlock, comprising:

an end module including a passive common berthing mechanism positioned around an open end of the end module and configured to selectively engage with a space station or a transportation vehicle such that the spacecraft airlock is configured to receive pressurized air from the space station or the transportation vehicle;
