Abstract

A technique involves modular storage of network service plan components and provisioning of same. A subset of the capabilities of a service design system can be granted to a sandbox system to enable customization of service plan offerings or other controls.

Claims (40)

1. A system comprising:

a network service plan provisioning system configured to communicate with an access network, the network service plan provisioning including a memory and a processor;

the memory storing a first traffic classification filter of a first service plan component and a second traffic classification filter of a second service plan component, the first traffic classification filter being configured to filter a traffic event and the second traffic classification filter being configured to filter the traffic event;

the processor configured to:

determine a superposition of the first traffic classification filter over the second traffic classification filter;

create network provisioning instructions, using the first service plan component and the second service plan component, in response to determining the superposition, wherein the network provisioning instructions include traffic inspection provisioning instructions for filtering the traffic event; and

provide the network provisioning instructions to the access network to enable filtering the traffic event.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

the access network configured to:

receive the network provisioning instructions from the network service plan provisioning system; and

provide the network provisioning instructions to one or more devices on the access network to filter the traffic event when detected.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the network provisioning instructions are created such that after providing the network provisioning instructions to the one or more devices, the one or more devices are enabled to perform traffic inspection comparison operations such that the traffic inspection provisioning instructions determine whether a given network traffic event matches the first traffic classification filter before determining whether the given network traffic event matches the second traffic classification filter.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the memory further stores a first network policy enforcement action of the first service plan component, the first network policy enforcement action configured to be triggered in response to the traffic event matching the first classification filter, and a second network policy enforcement action of the second service plan component, the second network policy enforcement action configured to be triggered in response to the traffic event matching the second classification filter; and

the network provisioning instructions further include policy enforcement provisioning instructions for triggering the filtering of the traffic event.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

obtain the first service plan component and second service plan component from a user operating a graphical user interface of the network service plan provisioning system.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network provisioning instructions are created such that after providing the network provisioning instructions to the one or more devices, the one or more devices are enabled to perform traffic inspection comparison operations such that the traffic inspection provisioning instructions determine whether a given network traffic event matches the second traffic classification filter only after determining that the network traffic event does not match the first traffic classification filter.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network provisioning instructions are created such that after providing the network provisioning instructions to the one or more devices, the one or more devices are enabled to perform traffic inspection comparison operations such that the traffic inspection provisioning instructions determine whether a given network traffic event matches the second traffic classification filter, after determining that the given network traffic event matches the first traffic classification filter.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive a user selection to superposition the first traffic classification filter over the second traffic classification filter.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein a policy enforcement priority rule includes a priority order for the first traffic classification filter and the second traffic classification filter.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein information specifying the first traffic classification filter comprises an inspection criterion including at least one of a specific device application, a specific network destination, a specific network source, a specific traffic type, a specific content type, or a specific traffic protocol.

11. A method for use by a system comprising a network service plan provisioning system configured to communicate with an access network, the network service plan provisioning system including a processor and a memory storing a first traffic classification filter of a first service plan component and a second traffic classification filter of a second service plan component, the first traffic classification filter being configured to filter a traffic event and the second traffic classification filter being configured to filter the traffic event, the method comprising:

determining, by the processor, a superposition of the first traffic classification filter over the second traffic classification filter;

creating, by the processor, network provisioning instructions, using the first service plan component and the second service plan component, in response to determining the superposition, wherein the network provisioning instructions include traffic inspection provisioning instructions for filtering the traffic event; and

providing, by the processor, the network provisioning instructions to the access network to enable filtering the traffic event.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the system further comprises the access network, and where in the method further comprises:

receiving, by the access network, the network provisioning instructions from the network service plan provisioning system; and

providing, by the access network, the network provisioning instructions to one or more devices on the access network to filter the traffic event when detected.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the network provisioning instructions are created such that after providing the network provisioning instructions to the one or more devices, the one or more devices are enabled to perform traffic inspection comparison operations such that the traffic inspection provisioning instructions determine whether a given network traffic event matches the first traffic classification filter before determining whether the given network traffic event matches the second traffic classification filter.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the memory further stores a first network policy enforcement action of the first service plan component, the first network policy enforcement action configured to be triggered in response to the traffic event matching the first classification filter, and a second network policy enforcement action of the second service plan component, the second network policy enforcement action configured to be triggered in response to the traffic event matching the second classification filter, and wherein the network provisioning instructions further includes policy enforcement provisioning instructions for triggering the filtering of the traffic event.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

obtaining the first service plan component and second service plan component from a user operating a graphical user interface of the network service plan provisioning system.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the network provisioning instructions are created such that after providing the network provisioning instructions to the one or more devices, the one or more devices are enabled to perform traffic inspection comparison operations such that the traffic inspection provisioning instructions determine whether a given network traffic event matches the second traffic classification filter only after determining that the network traffic event does not match the first traffic classification filter.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the network provisioning instructions are created such that after providing the network provisioning instructions to the one or more devices, the one or more devices are enabled to perform traffic inspection comparison operations such that the traffic inspection provisioning instructions determine whether a given network traffic event matches the second traffic classification filter, after determining that the given network traffic event matches the first traffic classification filter.

18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

receiving a user selection to superposition the first traffic classification filter over the second traffic classification filter.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein a policy enforcement priority rule includes a priority order for the first traffic classification filter and the second traffic classification filter.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein information specifying the first traffic classification filter comprises an inspection criterion including at least one of a specific device application, a specific network destination, a specific network source, a specific traffic type, a specific content type, or a specific traffic protocol.
