Abstract

An oral product includes a body that is wholly receivable in an oral cavity. The body includes a polymer matrix and one or more flavorants and/or active ingredients embedded in the polymer matrix. The polymer matrix can include a copolymer of ethylene and one or more vinyl monomers or zein. For example, the polymer can be ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and/or ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer. In some cases, the oral product can include tobacco and/or nicotine.

Claims (35)

1. An oral product comprising:

a mouth-stable polymer matrix including,

an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer;

an additive in the mouth-stable polymer matrix, the additive including,

an active ingredient, the active ingredient including nicotine, at least a portion of the nicotine bound to vinyl acetate groups of the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer; and

celluloid fibers in mouth-stable polymer matrix, the celluloid fibers configured to provide passages to release the additive from the mouth-stable polymer matrix.

2. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the nicotine is tobacco-derived nicotine.

3. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the nicotine is synthetic nicotine.

4. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer includes vinyl acetate in an amount ranging from 25 weight percent to 40 weight percent.

5. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is amorphous.

6. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is a random copolymer.

7. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the celluloid fibers include tobacco fibers.

8. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the celluloid fibers include sugar beet fibers, wood pulp fibers, cotton fibers, bran fibers, citrus pulp fibers, grass fibers, willow fibers, poplar fibers, or any combination thereof.

9. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the celluloid fibers are present in an amount greater than or equal to 10 weight percent.

10. The oral product of claim 1 , further comprising:

soluble fibers.

11. The oral product of claim 10 , wherein the soluble fibers include psyllium fibers.

12. The oral product of claim 1 , further comprising:

a plasticizer.

13. The oral product of claim 1 , further comprising:

starch.

14. The oral product of claim 1 , further comprising:

a surfactant.

15. The oral product of claim 1 , wherein the additive further includes a mineral, a vitamin, a dietary supplement, a nutraceutical, an energizing agent, a soothing agent, an amino acid, a chemesthesis agent, an antioxidant, a botanical, a teeth whitening agent, a therapeutic agent, or any combination thereof.

16. An oral product comprising:

a mouth-stable polymer matrix including,

an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer;

an additive in the mouth-stable polymer matrix, the additive including a flavorant, an active ingredient, or both the flavorant and the active ingredient; and

celluloid fibers in mouth-stable polymer matrix, the celluloid fibers configured to provide passages to release the additive from the mouth-stable polymer matrix, the celluloid fibers including CMC, HPMC, HPC, or any combination thereof.

17. The oral product of claim 16 , wherein

the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer includes vinyl acetate in an amount ranging from 25 weight percent to 40 weight percent, and

the celluloid fibers are present in an amount greater than or equal to 10 weight percent.

18. The oral product of claim 16 , wherein the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is amorphous.

19. The oral product of claim 16 , wherein the additive includes the flavorant.

20. The oral product of claim 19 , wherein the flavorant includes an encapsulated flavorant.
