Abstract

A single body port or body flange access device and method for performing laparoscopic surgery are disclosed. The device comprises a plurality of crisscrossing conduits through which surgical instruments may be inserted. The instruments are manipulated so that triangulation is obtained using one patient body flange while standard surgical procedures are performed on the patient.

Claims (10)

1. An access device for performing minimally invasive surgical procedures on a body, comprising:

a one-piece anchor body having two parallel surgical instrument passageways extending continuously therethrough from an uppermost surface of the anchor body to a lowermost surface of the anchor body and wherein the two parallel surgical instrument passageways are located through the one-piece anchor body and terminate at an entrance aperture on the uppermost surface of the one-piece anchor body and at an exit aperture on the lowermost surface of the one-piece anchor body, and wherein the two parallel surgical instrument passageways are dimensioned and configured to facilitate triangulation of two surgical instruments inserted therethrough.

2. An access device as recited in claim 1 , wherein a guiding conduit is associated with each of the two parallel surgical instrument passageways.

3. An access device as recited in claim 2 , wherein each of the guiding conduits associated with each of the two parallel surgical instrument passageways are curved inwardly toward one another.

4. An access device as recited in claim 2 , wherein each of the guiding conduits associated with each of the two parallel surgical instrument passageways are angled away from one another.

5. An access device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the anchor body is tapered from the uppermost surface toward the lowermost surface.

6. An access device for performing minimally invasive surgical procedures on a body, comprising: a one-piece anchor body having two parallel surgical instrument passageways extending continuously therethrough from an uppermost surface of the one-piece anchor body to a lowermost surface of the anchor body and wherein the two parallel surgical instrument passageways are located through the one-piece anchor body and terminate at an entrance aperture on the uppermost surface of the one-piece anchor body and at an exit aperture on the lowermost surface of the one-piece anchor body, and wherein a guiding conduit is associated with each of the two parallel surgical instrument passageways at the uppermost surface at the anchor body, and wherein the two parallel surgical instrument passageways are dimensioned and configured to facilitate triangulation of two surgical instruments inserted therethrough.

7. An access device as recited in claim 6 , wherein each of the guiding conduits associated with each of the two parallel surgical instrument passageways are curved inwardly toward one another.

8. An access device as recited in claim 6 , wherein each of the guiding conduits associated with each of the two parallel surgical instrument passageways are angled away from one another.

9. An access device as recited in claim 6 , wherein the anchor body is tapered from the uppermost surface toward the bottom lowermost surface.
