Abstract

The invention relates to compositions and methods of treatment employing compositions comprising polyelectrolyte complexes. The compositions include a water-soluble first polyelectrolyte bearing a net cationic charge or capable of developing a net cationic charge and a water-soluble second polyelectrolyte bearing a net anionic charge or capable of developing a net anionic charge. The total polyelectrolyte concentration of the first solution is at least 110 millimolar. The composition is free of coacervates, precipitates, latex particles, synthetic block copolymers, silicone copolymers, cross-linked poly(acrylic) and cross-linked water-soluble polyelectrolyte. The composition may be a concentrate, to be diluted prior to use to treat a surface.

Claims (43)

1. A dual chamber dispensing system for providing a polyelectrolyte composition, comprising:

(a) a bottle comprising a first chamber and a second chamber;

(b) the first chamber loaded with a first solution of the polyelectrolyte composition, the first solution comprising:

a. about 0.001 wt % to about 5.0 wt % of a water-soluble first polyelectrolyte bearing a net cationic charge or capable of developing a net cationic charge wherein said first polyelectrolyte is a poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) homopolymer;

b. about 0.001% to 0.19% by weight of a water-soluble second polyelectrolyte bearing a net anionic charge or capable of developing a net anionic charge;

c. an oxidant;

(c) the second chamber loaded with a second solution of the polyelectrolyte composition, the second solution comprising:

a. a solvent;

b. an adjuvant selected from the group consisting of: an inorganic acid, an inorganic base, an organic acid, an organic base, a salt an inorganic acid or base, a salt of an organic acid or base, a buffering agent, an oxidant, a chelating agent, a thickener, a hydrotrope, a surfactant, a fragrance and a dye;

(d) a dispensing head attached to the bottle comprising a trigger sprayer;

(e) a first dip tube connecting the trigger sprayer to the first chamber;

(f) a second dip tube connecting the trigger sprayer to the second chamber; and

forming the polyelectrolyte composition upon combination of the first and second solutions, the polyelectrolyte composition forms a polyelectrolyte complex from the first polyelectrolyte and the second polyelectrolyte; and

wherein the polyelectrolyte composition is free of precipitates, synthetic block copolymers, silicone copolymers, cross-linked poly(acrylic) and cross-linked water-soluble polyelectrolyte;

wherein R, the molar ratio of charged groups present on said first polyelectrolyte to oppositely charged groups present on said second polyelectrolyte, is from about 0.1 to 20; and

wherein the polyelectrolyte composition does not comprise a polymer fluorosurfactant derived from polymerization of fluorinated oxetane.

2. The dual chamber dispensing system for providing a polyelectrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein the adjuvant is a buffering agent.
