Abstract

Methods and systems for a media guidance application that provides advanced parental control features such as allowing parents to establish parental controls in a dynamic and individualized manner and allowing parents to track and/or limit the amount of time that a child views media content of a particular type.

Claims (41)

1. A method for automatically adjusting parental controls, the method comprising:

determining a statistical analysis of a relationship between a first program type and a second program type for a first user, wherein the first program type identifies a first plurality of media assets that share a first common characteristic and the second program type identifies a second plurality of media assets that share a second common characteristic;

identifying a group of users similar to the first user;

determining a threshold analysis of a relationship between the first program type and the second program type based on the group of users;

comparing the statistical analysis to the threshold analysis; and

blocking the first program type based on the comparison to prevent the first user from accessing the first plurality of media assets that share the first common characteristic.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first program type is blocked based on the statistical analysis exceeding the threshold analysis.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the statistical analysis is a first ratio of a total amount of time the first user consumed media assets of the first program type to a total amount of time the first user consumed media assets of the second program type, and wherein the threshold analysis is a second ratio of a total amount of time the average user of the group of users consumed media assets of the first program type to a total amount of time the average user of the group of users consumed media assets of the second program type.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising alerting a second user based on the comparison.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining whether the statistical analysis exceeds the threshold analysis.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the threshold analysis is performed according to a predetermined schedule.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising modifying the threshold analysis based on information received from a data source selected by a second user.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the group of users similar to the first user comprises:

accessing a social network; and

retrieving contacts of an account for the first user on the social network.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the group of users similar to the first user comprises:

comparing demographic information of the first user to demographic information for each user of a plurality of users; and

selecting at least one user of the plurality of users having demographic information matching the demographic information of the first user.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein users in the group of users are selected by a second user.

11. A system for automatically adjusting parental controls, the system comprising:

storage circuitry configured to store a relationship between a first program type and a second program type for a first user;

communications circuitry configured to access information associated with a plurality of users; and

control circuitry configured to:

determine a statistical analysis of the relationship between a first program type and a second program type for a first user, wherein the first program type identifies a first plurality of media assets that share a first common characteristic and the second program type identifies a second plurality of media assets that share a second common characteristic;

identify a group of users similar to the first user;

determine a threshold analysis of a relationship between the first program type and the second program type based on the group of users;

compare the statistical analysis to the threshold analysis; and

block the first program type based on the comparison to prevent the first user from accessing the first plurality of media assets that share the first common characteristic.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first program type is blocked based on the statistical analysis exceeding the threshold analysis.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the statistical analysis is a first ratio of a total amount of time the first user consumed media assets of the first program type to a total amount of time the first user consumed media assets of the second program type, and wherein the threshold analysis is a second ratio of a total amount of time the average user of the group of users consumed media assets of the first program type to a total amount of time the average user of the group of users consumed media assets of the second program type.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to alert a second user based on the comparison.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine whether the statistical analysis exceeds the threshold analysis.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the threshold analysis is performed according to a predetermined schedule.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to modify the threshold analysis based on information received from a data source selected by a second user.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to identify the group of users similar to the first user is further configured to:

access a social network using the communications circuitry; and

retrieve contacts of an account for the first user on the social network.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to identify the group of users similar to the first user is further configured to:

compare demographic information of the first user to demographic information for each user of a plurality of users; and

select at least one user of the plurality of users having demographic information matching the demographic information of the first user.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein users in the group of users are selected by a second user.
