Abstract

The present invention provides an expandable fusion device capable of being installed inside an intervertebral disc space to maintain normal disc spacing and restore spinal stability, thereby facilitating an intervertebral fusion. In one embodiment, the fusion device includes a central ramp, a first endplate, and a second endplate, the central ramp capable of being moved in a first direction to move the first and second endplates outwardly and into an expanded configuration. The fusion device is capable of being deployed down an endoscopic tube.

Claims (41)

1. A method of installing an expandable spacer between vertebral bodies comprising:

positioning an expandable spacer in a contracted state between vertebral bodies, the expandable spacer including:

first and second endplates with each endplate having a first portion and a second portion longitudinally spaced from the first portion;

a body positioned between the first and second endplates;

a drive screw positioned within the body;

rotating the drive screw to cause a distance between the first portions of the two endplates to increase relative to the distance between the second portions of the two endplates until the angle of the first endplate to the second endplate reaches a preselected angle; and

further rotating the drive screw only to cause the distance between the two endplates to increase while the angle of the two endplates relative to a horizontal axis of the body is maintained.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable spacer includes a nose section threadably coupled to the drive screw and the step of rotating includes rotating the drive screw to cause the nose to move longitudinally relative to the drive screw.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the drive screw includes a head and a threaded shaft wherein the head has an annular recess and a retainer ring disposed around the annular recess and around a recess in the body;

the step of rotating includes rotating the drive screw to longitudinally move the nose while the body remains stationary relative to the drive screw.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the shaft is threaded and is threadably received in the nose section.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of rotating expands the expandable spacer lordotically and the step of further rotating expands the expandable spacer in parallel.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first endplate includes a first end having a pair of first end ramped portions and a second end having a pair of second end ramped portions.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first endplate comprises a first side portion having a first central ramp and a second side portion having a second central ramp, wherein the first central ramp and second central ramp are positioned between the pair of first end ramped portions and the second end ramped portions.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the body includes rear lower ramps that engage the second end ramped portions of the first endplate to vertically move the first endplate.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the expandable spacer includes a nose section threadably coupled to the drive screw and having a ramped nose portion at a first selected angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the body;

the first endplate includes a first end having a pair of first end ramped portions at a second selected angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the body;

the first and second selected angles are different such that when the drive screw is rotated, the first end of the first endplate rises before the other end.

10. A method of installing an expandable spacer between vertebral bodies comprising:

positioning an expandable spacer in a contracted state between vertebral bodies, the expandable spacer including:

first and second endplates with each endplate having a first portion and a second portion longitudinally spaced from the first portion;

a body positioned between the first and second endplates;

a drive screw rotatably coupled to the body via a retainer ring disposed around a head of the drive screw;

rotating the drive screw to cause a distance between the first portions of the two endplates to increase relative to the distance between the second portions of the two endplates until the angle of the first endplate to the second endplate reaches a preselected angle; and

further rotating the drive only screw to cause the distance between the two endplates to increase while the angle of the two endplates relative to a horizontal axis of the body is maintained.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the drive screw includes a threaded shaft rotatably coupled to a nose section, and the step of rotating the drive screw moves the nose section longitudinally while the body remains stationary relative to the drive screw.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the head comprises a recess for receiving a retaining ring therein.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the head is received and retained within a bore in the body.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the expandable device is adapted to perform lordotic expansion and parallel expansion.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein:

the step of rotating expands the expandable spacer lordotically; and

the step of further rotating expands in parallel the expandable spacer which has already expanded lordotically.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the expandable device further comprises a nose operably attached to the drive screw.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the nose further comprises an inner thread for engaging the drive screw.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein expansion is caused by drawing the nose closer to the body.

19. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the expandable spacer includes a nose section threadably coupled to the drive screw and having a ramped nose portion at a first selected angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the body;

the first endplate includes a first end having a pair of first end ramped portions at a second selected angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the body;

the first and second selected angles are different such that when the drive screw is rotated, the first end of the first endplate rises before the other end.
