Lipid compositions
The present invention provides improved processes for extracting and preparing lipids from biological sources for use in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and functional foods.
1. A krill phospholipid composition comprising:
from 50% to 85% w/w phospholipids;
from 5% to 35% w/w triglycerides;
and wherein the composition further has the following properties:
the composition comprises from 2% w/w to 13% w/w free fatty acids;
the composition comprises less than 1.0% w/w inorganic salts; and
the composition comprises less than 10 ppm total arsenic.
2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition further has one or more of the properties:
the composition comprises from 0.5% w/w to 10% w/w lysophospholipids;
the composition comprises from 0.01% to 1% w/w ethyl esters;
the composition is characterized in having a conductivity of less than 20 μS/cm when measured with 5% dry matter in 95% ethanol.
3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition further has two or more of the following properties:
the composition comprises from 0.5% w/w to 10% w/w lysophospholipids;
the composition comprises from 0.01% to 1% w/w ethyl esters; and
the composition is characterized in having a conductivity of less than 20 μS/cm when measured with 5% dry matter in 95% ethanol.
4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition has the following properties:
the composition comprises from 0.5% w/w to 10% w/w lysophospholipids;
the composition comprises from 0.01% to 1% w/w ethyl esters; and
the composition is characterized in having a conductivity of less than 20 μS/cm when measured with 5% dry matter in 95% ethanol.
5. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising a second nutraceutical ingredient.
6. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising a pharmaceutical carrier.
7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is provided in a delivery vehicle selected from the group consisting of an oral delivery vehicle, a functional food, a nutritional supplement, a dietary supplement and a medical food.
8. The composition of claim 7 , wherein said oral delivery vehicle is a soft gel capsule.
9. A krill phospholipid composition comprising:
from 30% to 50% w/w phospholipids;
from 32% to 52% w/w triglycerides;
and wherein the composition further has the following properties:
the composition comprises from 2% w/w to 13% w/w free fatty acids;
the composition comprises less than 1.0% w/w inorganic salts; and
the composition comprises less than 10 ppm total arsenic.
10. The composition of claim 9 , wherein the composition further has one or more of the properties:
the composition comprises from 0.5% w/w to 10% w/w lysophospholipids;
the composition comprises from 0.01% to 1% w/w ethyl esters;
the composition is characterized in having a conductivity of less than 20 μS/cm when measured with 5% dry matter in 95% ethanol.
11. The composition of claim 9 , wherein the composition further has two or more of the following properties:
the composition comprises from 0.5% w/w to 10% w/w lysophospholipids;
the composition comprises from 0.01% to 1% w/w ethyl esters; and
the composition is characterized in having a conductivity of less than 20 μS/cm when measured with 5% dry matter in 95% ethanol.
12. The composition of claim 9 , wherein the composition has the following properties:
the composition comprises from 0.5% w/w to 10% w/w lysophospholipids;
the composition comprises from 0.01% to 1% w/w ethyl esters; and
the composition is characterized in having a conductivity of less than 20 μS/cm when measured with 5% dry matter in 95% ethanol.
13. The composition of claim 9 , further comprising a second nutraceutical ingredient.
14. The composition of claim 9 , further comprising a pharmaceutical carrier.
15. The composition of claim 9 , wherein the composition is provided in a delivery vehicle selected from the group consisting of an oral delivery vehicle, a functional food, a nutritional supplement, a dietary supplement and a medical food.
16. The composition of claim 15 , wherein said oral delivery vehicle is a soft gel capsule.
