Abstract

A processing system including a singulation system is disclosed. The singulation system includes a conveying system for moving objects to be sorted from a source area along a first direction, a detection system for detecting objects at the conveying system, and for selecting certain selected objects for removal from the conveying system, and a removal system for removing the certain selected objects from the conveying system for providing a singulated stream of objects.

Claims (36)

1. An object processing system for processing objects, said object processing system comprising:

a first conveyor for moving objects to be sorted from an infeed area along an upward direction on the input conveyor to a second conveyor, said second conveyor for moving the objects from the first conveyor in a generally horizontal direction;

a detection and selection system including at least one camera and at least one computer processing system for detecting the objects moving in the generally horizontal direction on the second conveyor and for selecting certain objects for removal from the second conveyor to provide a singulated stream of objects on the second conveyor; and

an articulated arm having an end effector for picking the certain selected objects from the second conveyor and placing the certain selected objects onto a chute for returning the certain selected objects to the infeed area in a downward direction.

2. The object processing system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first conveyor is a cleated conveyor.

3. The object processing system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first conveyor is an adjustable speed conveyor.

4. The object processing system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the second conveyor is a cleated conveyor.

5. The object processing system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the second conveyor is an adjustable speed conveyor.

6. The object processing system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the singulated stream of objects includes heterogeneous objects.

7. The object processing system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the object processing system includes a drop scanner for receiving the singulated stream of objects falling one at a time from the second conveyor.

8. The object processing system as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the object processing system further includes a third conveyor for providing the singulated stream of objects toward any of a plurality of destination locations.

9. An object processing system for processing objects, said object processing system comprising:

a first conveyor for moving objects to be sorted from an infeed area along an upward direction to a second conveyor, said second conveyor for moving the objects from the first conveyor in a generally horizontal direction on the second conveyor;

a detection system including at least one camera for detecting the objects moving in the generally horizontal direction on the second conveyor;

a selection system including at least one computer processing system for selecting certain objects for removal from the second conveyor to provide a singulated stream of objects on the second conveyor;

an urging member that includes a pull bar for pulling the certain selected objects from the second conveyor onto a chute for returning the certain selected objects to the infeed area in a downward direction; and

a drop scanner having a plurality of cameras arranged between a top opening and a bottom opening thereof, wherein the plurality of cameras capture identifying indica for each object included among the singulated stream of objects as the objects fall one at a time from the second conveyor through the drop scanner.

10. The object processing system as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the first conveyor includes a cleated conveyor.

11. The object processing system as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the first conveyor is an adjustable speed conveyor.

12. The object processing system as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the second conveyor is a cleated conveyor.

13. The object processing system as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the second conveyor is an adjustable speed conveyor.

14. The object processing system as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the singulated stream of objects includes heterogeneous objects.

15. The object processing system as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the object processing system further includes a third conveyor for providing the singulated stream of objects toward any of a plurality of destination locations.

16. A object processing system for processing objects, said object processing system comprising:

a first conveyor for moving objects to be sorted from an infeed hopper along an upward direction on the first conveyor;

a second conveyor for moving the objects from the first conveyor in a horizontal direction on the second conveyor;

a detection system that includes a camera for detecting the objects moving on the second conveyor;

a controller for selecting certain objects for removal from the second conveyor to provide a singulated stream of objects on the second conveyor;

an urging member that includes a push bar for pushing the certain selected objects from the second conveyor onto a chute that leads to the infeed hopper; and

a drop scanner having a plurality of cameras arranged between a top opening and a bottom opening thereof, wherein the plurality of cameras capture identifying indica for each object included among the singulated stream of objects as the objects fall one at a time from the second conveyor through the drop scanner.

17. The object processing system as claimed in claim 16 , wherein the first conveyor is a cleated conveyor.

18. The object processing system as claimed in claim 16 , wherein the first conveyor is an adjustable speed conveyor.

19. The object processing system as claimed in claim 16 , wherein the second conveyor is a cleated conveyor.

20. The object processing system as claimed in claim 16 , wherein the second conveyor is an adjustable speed conveyor.

21. The object processing system as claimed in claim 16 , wherein the singulated stream of objects includes heterogeneous objects.

22. The object processing system as claimed in claim 16 , wherein the object processing system further includes a third conveyor for providing the singulated stream of objects toward any of a plurality of destination locations.
