Grooves of golf club heads and methods to manufacture grooves of golf club heads
Putter type club head with vertical groove patterns are described herein. A putter type club head comprises a putter face having a plurality of first curved grooves and a plurality of second curved grooves. The first curved grooves and the second curved grooves extend in a general vertical direction, and intersect each other at a plurality of points across the putter face. The width and depth of the first curved grooves and the second curved grooves can vary across the putter face in a direction extending from a heel end to a toe end, and/or in a direction extending from a top rail to a sole. The vertical groove pattern provides consistent ball speed performance for any impact location on the putter face.
1. A putter type golf club head comprising:
a putter face defined by a toe end, a heel end, a top rail and a sole, the putter face comprising a plurality of first curved grooves and a plurality of second curved grooves, each of the first curved grooves and the second curved grooves extend from the top rail to the sole, and a plurality of land portions between the first curved grooves and the second curved grooves; wherein:
the plurality of first curved grooves are parallel to each other;
the plurality of second curved grooves are parallel to each other;
the plurality of first curved grooves intersect the plurality of second curved grooves at a plurality of points along the plurality of second curved grooves;
the land portions form areas on the putter face that contact a golf ball during impact;
the area of the land portions at a center portion of the putter face are equal to the area of the land portions near the toe end;
the putter face is planar and extends in a vertical orientation from a ground plane; and
a depth of at least one of the plurality of first curved grooves or the plurality of second curved grooves varies in a direction extending from the heel end to the toe end, and in a direction extending from the top rail to the sole.
2. The putter type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the area of the land portions at the center portion is equal to the area of the land portions near the heel end.
3. The putter type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein a depth of the plurality of first curved grooves or the plurality of second curved grooves is greater at the center portion than near the heel end and near the toe end.
4. The putter type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein a depth of a portion of the plurality of first curved grooves or the plurality of second curved grooves ranges from 0.003 inch to 0.017 inch.
5. The putter type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein each first curved groove of the plurality of first curved grooves comprise an equal width; and wherein each second curved groove of the plurality of second curved grooves comprise an equal width.
6. The putter type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the area of the land portions varies in a direction extending from the top rail to the sole.
7. The putter type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the putter type golf club head has a loft angle less than 7 degrees.
8. The putter type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the putter face comprises a face insert and the plurality of first curved grooves and the plurality of second curved grooves are disposed on the face insert.
9. A putter type golf club head comprising:
a putter face defined by a toe end, a heel end, a top rail and a sole, the putter face comprising:
a plurality of first curved grooves and a plurality of second curved grooves, each of the first curved grooves and the second curved grooves extend from the top rail to the sole; and
a plurality of land portions separating the plurality of first curved grooves and the plurality of second curved grooves; wherein:
the plurality of first curved grooves are parallel to each other;
the plurality of second curved grooves are parallel to each other;
the plurality of first curved grooves intersect the plurality of second curved grooves at a plurality of points along the plurality of second curved grooves;
the land portions form areas on the putter face that contact a golf ball during impact;
the area of the land portions varies in a direction extending from the top rail to the sole;
the putter face is planar and extends in a vertical orientation from a ground plane; and
a depth of at least one of the plurality of first curved grooves or the plurality of second curved grooves varies in a direction extending from the heel end to the toe end, and in a direction extending from the top rail to the sole.
10. The putter type golf club head of claim 9 , wherein each first curved groove of the plurality of first curved grooves comprise an equal width; and wherein each second curved groove of the plurality of second curved grooves comprise an equal width.
11. The putter type golf club head of claim 9 , wherein the area of the land portions at a center portion of the putter face are equal to the area of the land portions near the toe end.
12. The putter type golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the area of the land portions at the center portion of the putter face are equal to the area of the land portions near the heel end.
13. The putter type golf club head of claim 9 , wherein the putter type golf club head has a loft angle less than 7 degrees.
14. The putter type golf club head of claim 9 , wherein a depth of the plurality of first curved grooves or the plurality of second curved grooves is greater near a center portion of the putter face than near the heel end and near the toe end.
15. A putter type golf club head comprising:
a putter face defined by a toe end, a heel end, a top rail and a sole, the putter face comprising:
a plurality of first curved grooves and a plurality of second curved grooves, each of the first curved grooves and the second curved grooves extend from the top rail to the sole; and
a plurality of land portions separating the plurality of first curved grooves and the plurality of second curved grooves; wherein:
the putter face defines a centerline extending through a geometric center of the putter face from the heel end to the toe end;
the plurality of first curved grooves are parallel to each other;
the plurality of second curved grooves are parallel to each other;
the plurality of first curved grooves intersect the plurality of second curved grooves at a plurality of points along the plurality of second curved grooves;
the land portions form areas on the putter face that contact a golf ball during impact;
the area of the land portions along the centerline are greater than the area of the land portions near the top rail or sole;
the putter face is planar and extends in a vertical orientation from a ground plane; and
a depth of at least one of the plurality of first curved grooves or the plurality of second curved grooves varies in a direction extending from the heel end to the toe end, and in a direction extending from the top rail to the sole.
16. The putter type golf club head of claim 15 , wherein the area of the land portions varies in a direction extending from the sole to the top rail.
17. The putter type golf club head of claim 15 , wherein each first curved groove of the plurality of first curved grooves comprise an equal width; and wherein each second curved groove of the plurality of second curved grooves comprise an equal width.
18. The putter type golf club head of claim 15 , wherein a depth of a portion of the plurality of first curved grooves or the plurality of second curved grooves ranges from 0.003 inch to 0.017 inch.
19. The putter type golf club head of claim 15 , wherein a depth of the plurality of first curved grooves or the second curved grooves increases in a direction extending from the toe end to a center portion of the putter face, and in a direction extending from the heel end to the center portion.
20. The putter type golf club head of claim 15 , wherein the putter type golf club head has a loft angle less than 7 degrees.
