Abstract

A sensor film comprising: a substrate core having a first surface and a second surface; at least one sensing element for sensing at least one property; a first conductive layer residing on the first surface, the first conductive layer having first solder mask coated thereon, and wherein the first conductive layer is grounded; and a second conductive layer residing on the second surface, the second conductive layer having a second solder mask coated thereon, and coupled to the at least one sensing element.

Claims (31)

1. A medical instrument comprising:

an elongate body; and

a sensor film including at least one sensing element and a substrate adapted to carry communications signals from the at least one sensing element along the elongate body, and

wherein the sensor film is coupled to the elongate body such that the at least one sensing element is operable to measure at least one property of the medical instrument, and

wherein the at least one sensing element includes a strain gauge coupled to the elongate body such that the strain gauge is operable to measure compression of the elongate body,

wherein the strain gauge is coupled to the elongate body via an adhesive, and

wherein the adhesive has a hardness between a hardness of the strain gauge and a hardness of the elongate body.

2. the medical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the sensor film is conformally laminated to the elongate body between a proximal end and a distal end of the elongate body.

3. The medical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the elongate body has an effective elastic limit, the sensor film extends along the elongate body between a proximal end and a distal end of the elongate body, and the sensor film is made of a flexible material having an effective elastic limit that exceeds the effective elastic limit of the elongated body.

4. The medical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the elongate body extends between a proximal end and a distal end, the at least one sensing element includes a first sensing element at the distal end, and the sensor film communicatively couples the first sensing element to an electronics module at the proximal end.

5. The medical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the strain gauge includes more than one strain gauge pattern extending in different directions.

6. The medical instrument of claim 5 , wherein the strain gauge includes a first strain gauge pattern and a second strain gauge pattern placed perpendicular to the first strain gauge pattern to provide thermal compensation.

7. The medical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the at least one sensing element includes a plurality of strain gauges each coupled to the elongate body to measure compression of the elongate body and including the strain gauge with a pattern arranged in a first direction and a second strain gauge with a pattern arranged in a second direction different from the first direction.

8. The medical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the sensor film is interchangeable.

9. A medical instrument, comprising:

an elongate body extending between a proximal end and a distal end;

an end effector at the distal end of the elongate body;

a handle at the proximal end of the elongate body; and

a sensing element coupled to the elongate body such that the sensing element is operable to measure at least one property of the elongate body, and

wherein the sensing element is a strain gauge coupled to the elongate body such that the strain gauge is operable to measure compression of the elongate body, and

wherein the strain gauge is coupled to the elongate body via an adhesive, and

wherein the adhesive has a hardness between a hardness of the strain gauge and a hardness of the elongate body.

10. The medical instrument of claim 9 , wherein the strain gauge is coupled to the elongate body by welding the strain gauge to the elongate body.

11. The medical instrument of claim 9 , wherein the strain gauge includes more than one strain gauge pattern.

12. The medical instrument of claim 11 , wherein the strain gauge includes a first strain gauge pattern and a second strain gauge pattern placed perpendicular to the first strain gauge pattern to provide thermal compensation.

13. A medical instrument, comprising:

an elongate body extending between a proximal end and a distal end; and

a sensing element coupled to the elongate body such that the sensing element is operable to measure at least one property of the medical instrument, and

wherein the sensing element is a strain gauge coupled to the elongate body to measure compression of the elongate body,

wherein the strain gauge is coupled to the elongate body via an adhesive, and

wherein the adhesive has a hardness between a hardness of the strain gauge and a hardness of the elongate body.
