Abstract

Disclosed are stable, non-irritating, skin treatment active agents containing formulations and delivery systems for topical application to the skin. The disclosed topical formulations and delivery systems provide controlled, gentle release of the active agents into the skin for the treatment of amenable skin conditions as well as for improvement of aesthetic skin properties. Also provided are methods for the formulation, manufacture and use of the disclosed formulations and delivery systems.

Claims (39)

1. A topical formulation comprising:

a skin treatment active agent comprising about 0.01% to about 30% retinol;

an activation solvent system comprising about 10% to about 90% isopentyldiol, about 5% to about 90% dimethyl isosorbide, and a non-ionic surfactant, wherein the formulation comprises (% w/w):

about 1% to about 40% polysorbate 80;

about 0.01% to about 10% caffeine;

up to about 80% ethoxydiglycol;

about 0.1% to about 15% green tea polyphenols isolated and purified from the leaves of Camellia sinensis plants;

up to about 30% polysorbate 20;

up to about 20% bakuchiol;

up to about 20% black tea extract; and

up to about 20% licorice root extract wherein the ethoxydiglycol, polysorbate 20, bakuchiol, black tea extract, and licorice root extract are present in the formulation.

2. The formulation of claim 1 comprising (% w/w):

about 45% to about 65% isopentyldiol;

about 6% to about 10% polysorbate 80;

about 0.5% to about 2.5% caffeine;

about 20% to about 40% dimethyl isosorbide;

about 1% to about 5% ethoxydiglycol;

about 0.1% to about 5% green tea polyphenols isolated and purified from the leaves of Camellia sinensis plants;

about 0.05% to about 1.5% retinol;

about 0.05% to about 2% polysorbate 20;

about 0.1% to about 3% bakuchiol;

about 0.001% to about 5% black tea extract; and

about 0.001% to about 5% licorice root extract.

3. The formulation of claim 1 comprising (% w/w):

QS to 100% isopentyldiol;

about 8% to about 9% polysorbate 80;

about 1% to about 1.5% caffeine;

about 25% to about 35% dimethyl isosorbide;

about 2% to about 3% ethoxydiglycol;

about 1% to about 1.5% green tea polyphenols isolated and purified from the leaves of Camellia sinensis plants;

about 0.2% to about 1.2% retinol;

about 0.2% to about 1.2% polysorbate 20;

about 0.5% to about 1.5% bakuchiol;

about 0.001% to about 0.1% black tea extract; and

about 0.001% to about 0.1% licorice root extract.

4. The topical formulation of claim 1 , wherein a skin treated with the formulation for a duration of at least 4 weeks exhibits epidermal thickening of at least about 30%.

5. The topical formulation of claim 1 , wherein a skin treated with the formulation for a duration of at least 4 weeks exhibits at least two times more collagen deposition as compared to a baseline.

6. The topical formulation of claim 1 , wherein a skin treated with the formulation for a duration of at least 4 weeks exhibits less than about 100% increase in transepidermal water loss as compared to a baseline.

7. The topical formulation of claim 1 , wherein the formulation is selected from the group consisting of a serum, an emulsion, a foam, a spray, an ointment, a gel, and a lotion.
