Abstract

In accordance with various aspects of the present teachings, systems and methods for applying treatment energy, e.g., electromagnetic radiation such as laser radiation in the visible and near infrared wavelengths, to body areas having bulges and fat deposits, loose skin, pain, acne and/or wounds. In some aspects, the systems and methods can enable relatively lengthy treatments to be performed by having the practitioner set-up and/or start the treatment, thereafter allowing the treatment to proceed safely and effectively without the continued presence of the practitioner.

Claims (35)

1. A non-invasive body tissue treatment system, the system comprising:

a source operable to generate RF energy;

a housing, the source disposed within the housing;

a first flexible umbilical extending from the housing, the first flexible umbilical defining a first conduit therethrough;

a second flexible umbilical extending from the housing, the second flexible umbilical defining a second conduit therethrough;

an arm extending from the housing, wherein the arm supports a first section of each of the first flexible umbilical and the second flexible umbilical, wherein the arm receives or supports a second section of the first flexible umbilical and a second section of the second flexible umbilical above the housing;

a first applicator coupled to a distal end of the first flexible umbilical, the first applicator configured to direct RF energy to one or more target tissue regions;

a second applicator coupled to a distal end of the second flexible umbilical; and

a brake, wherein the first flexible umbilical contacts the brake, the brake configured such that a length of the first flexible umbilical between the brake and the first applicator is adjustable.

2. The system of claim 1 further comprising one or more signal cables disposed in the first conduit and in electrical communication with the first applicator, the one or more signal cables operable to provide electrical communication to or from the first applicator.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first applicator comprises one or more contact sensors operable to contact skin surface and transmit a signal in response to detecting incomplete or absence of contact with skin surface.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the one or more contact sensors are in electrical communication with the one or more signal cables, wherein the signal is transmitted using the one or more signal cables.

5. The system of claim 3 further comprising one or more fluid pathways disposed in the first conduit, wherein the one or more fluid pathways are operable to deliver and return cooling fluid from the first applicator.

6. The system of claim 5 further comprising a cooling mechanism operable to cool skin-contacting surface of the first applicator when performing treatment to maintain the skin contacting surface at a desired temperature during treatment.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein one or more of the umbilical comprises a flexible outer surface and a flexible inner shell.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the flexible inner shell comprises a metal.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the arm supports the first flexible umbilical and the second flexible umbilical above the housing and in a position for substantially unattended treatment of a patient.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the further comprising a brake is in contact with the first flexible umbilical operable to maintain the first flexible umbilical at a desired position relative to a patient.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first flexible umbilical is looped through the arm and the brake.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the arm comprises a substantially vertical portion.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the arm comprises a substantially horizontal portion.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the arm further comprises an arm housing having an arm surface, wherein the arm surface defines one or more apertures, wherein a portion of the first flexible umbilical is disposed through the one or more apertures.

15. A non-invasive body tissue treatment system, the system comprising:

a source operable to generate RF energy;

a housing, the source disposed within the housing;

a first flexible umbilical extending from the housing, the first flexible umbilical defining a first conduit therethrough;

a second flexible umbilical extending from the housing, the second flexible umbilical defining a second conduit therethrough;

a first applicator coupled to a distal end of the first flexible umbilical, the first applicator configured to direct RF energy to one or more target tissue regions;

a second applicator coupled to a distal end of the second flexible umbilical;

an arm extending from the housing, wherein the arm supports a first section of each of the first flexible umbilical and the second flexible umbilical, wherein the arm receives or supports a second section of the first flexible umbilical and a second section of the second flexible umbilical above the housing;

one or more signal cables disposed in the first conduit and in electrical communication with the first applicator, the one or more signal cables operable to provide electrical communication to or from the first applicator;

one or more fluid pathways disposed in the first conduit, wherein the one or more fluid pathways are operable to deliver and return cooling fluid from the first applicator;

and

a brake, wherein the first flexible umbilical contacts the brake, the brake configured such that a length of the first flexible umbilical between the brake and the first applicator is adjustable.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the arm further comprises an arm housing having an arm surface, wherein the arm surface defines one or more apertures, wherein a portion of the first flexible umbilical is disposed through the one or more apertures.
