Abstract

A header for a heat exchanger and method for cleaning a heat exchanger in a loop without disconnecting loop components is provided. The header is in flow communication with the heat exchanger for distributing fluid through a plurality of adjacent channels. The header is connected between a main heat exchanger inlet nozzle and a channel flow distributor. A filter element is disposed within the header between the nozzle and channel flow distributor. Under normal operation, the filter element removes particulates and fouling material from the main flow stream before it enters the heat exchanger channels. During the cleaning process, fluid is injected on or through the filter element to remove particulates and fouling material through at least one outlet port. The header arrangement allows the filter element to be ‘cleaned in place’ without draining the system and disconnecting the heat exchanger or other components from the flow loop.

Claims (11)

1. A header, comprising:

the header in flow communication with a heat exchanger for distributing fluid through a plurality of adjacent channels, the header connected between at least one heat exchanger inlet nozzle and a channel flow distributor;

a filter screen disposed within the header to collect fouling material, the filter screen having a total surface area through which the fluid flows;

at least one clean-out port in the header between the inlet nozzle and the filter screen to which flow laden with fouling material during the cleaning process is discharged from the header;

a first cavity provided between the filter screen and the channel flow distributer of the heat exchanger; and

at least one inlet port provided in the first cavity to introduce cleaning fluid, the at least one inlet port in fluid communication with the total surface area of the filter at any one time;

wherein the cleaning fluid is introduced into the first cavity through the cleaning fluid inlet port, flows through the total surface area of the filter screen to dislodge fouling material collected on the filter screen, and is discharged from the at least one clean-out port.

2. The header of claim 1 , wherein the filter screen includes a plurality of apertures, the filter screen being oriented in serial flow with the flow path between the first cavity and the second cavity such that fluid passes through the filter screen.

3. The header of claim 1 , wherein the at least one inlet port comprises a plurality of inlet ports; further comprising a plurality of outlet ports; the plurality of inlet ports and the plurality of outlet ports configured to increase a flow capacity through the header.

4. The header of claim 1 , wherein the first cavity is disposed in direct flow communication with the channel flow distributor.

5. The header of claim 1 , wherein the first cavity is disposed adjacent to an inlet cavity, and wherein the filter screen is disposed between a main cavity and the first cavity.
