Abstract

This disclosure relates generally to electronic musical instruments, systems, and methods. More particularly, this disclosure relates to electronic percussion instruments such as tom toms, snare drums, bass drums, cymbals, and hi-hats, and assemblies of instruments (e.g., percussion instruments), such as drum sets. Even more particularly, this disclosure relates to wireless electronic percussion instruments, and percussion instruments with interchangeable and/or removable components to change the instrument between a traditional percussion instrument (that relies on resonance and/or vibration to produce sound) and an electronic percussion instrument. The present disclosure also relates to electronic cymbal instruments, such as cymbal assemblies and hi-hat assemblies, that can be used in conjunction with a traditional acoustic metal cymbal.

Claims (60)

1. A drum, comprising:

5. The drum of claim 1 , wherein said first position is an upward position and said second position is a downward position; and

wherein said electronic is configured to wirelessly send instrument signals corresponding to a snare sound when said throw-off is in said first position and corresponding to a second sound different from said snare sound when said throw-off is in said second position.

6. A drum, comprising:

a wooden drum shell comprising a wooden outer wall and a wooden inner wall;

a drumhead on said drum shell;

a plurality of brackets attached to said wooden inner wall;

a trigger platform connected to said wooden inner wall; and

an electronics module on said trigger platform, said electronics module comprising:

two or more sensors, said two or more sensors comprising:

a first sensor connected to an underside of said drumhead and configured to produce an impulse upon actuation of said drumhead; and

a second sensor in mechanical communication with said underside of said drumhead and configured to produce an impulse in response to pressure on said drumhead, wherein said second sensor is a force sensitive resistor (“FSR”) sensor configured to sense whether pressure is being applied to said drumhead when said drumhead is actuated; and

an electronic configured to accept impulses from said two or more sensors and further configured to wirelessly send instrument signals to an external device, said electronic comprising a circuit board and a transmitter;

wherein said electronics module is below said drumhead and said second sensor is below said first sensor;

wherein said instrument signals are based on the impulses accepted from said first and second sensors; and

wherein said trigger platform is removably attached to said plurality of brackets such that said trigger platform and said electronics module are removable from said drum.

7. The drum of claim 6 , wherein said first sensor is a piezoelectric sensor.

8. The drum of claim 6 , wherein said drum further comprises third and fourth sensors connected to said underside of said drumhead and each configured to produce an impulse upon actuation of said drumhead;

wherein said electronic is further configured to accept impulses from said third and fourth sensors, and wherein said instrument signals are also based on the impulses accepted from said third and fourth sensors.

9. The drum of claim 6 , wherein said electronics module further comprises a local power source configured to power said electronic.

10. The drum of claim 6 , wherein said drum further comprises third and fourth sensors, wherein said first sensor is connected approximately in a center of said underside of said drumhead, and said third and fourth sensors are connected on diametrically opposing sides of the center of said underside of said drumhead.

11. The drum of claim 6 , further comprising a third sensor in mechanical communication with said drum shell and configured to produce an impulse in response to vibration of said drum shell, wherein said electronic is further configured to accept impulses from said third sensor, said instrument signals based on the impulses accepted from said first, second, and third sensors.

12. The drum of claim 6 , wherein said instrument signals differ based on whether said second sensor senses pressure being applied to said drumhead when said drumhead is actuated, and if pressure is being applied, how much pressure is being applied.

13. The drum of claim 6 , wherein said second sensor is separated from said first sensor by a foam component.

14. The drum of claim 6 , wherein said trigger platform is removably attached to said plurality of brackets by a plurality of connectors.

15. The drum of claim 6 , wherein said second sensor is directly below said first sensor.

16. The drum of claim 6 , wherein said second sensor is configured to sense how much pressure is being applied to said drumhead when said drumhead is actuated;

wherein said instrument signals are based upon impulses received by said electronic from said first sensor based upon the force of actuations, and further based upon impulses received by said electronic from said second sensor based upon the amount of pressure being applied to said drumhead during said actuations.

17. The drum of claim 6 , wherein said second sensor is directly below said first sensor, and further comprising one or more foam components between and mechanically connecting said first sensor and said second sensor, wherein said pressure is transferred from said drumhead through said first sensor and said one or more foam components to said second sensor.
